Bears Have Decision To Make On Mark Sanchez

By Chris Emma-

CHICAGO (CBS) — When the Bears needed a quarterback to protect rookie Mitchell Trubisky — their prized investment — from re-entering in the fourth quarter of an exhibition Thursday evening, the insurance policy they signed in March wasn’t available.

Mark Sanchez has been listed as the team’s backup quarterback to this point, but coach John Fox said that he wasn’t available for the preseason finale. Instead, the team went into the game carrying just two quarterbacks — Trubisky and Connor Shaw.

Sure enough, Shaw was pulled away to be evaluated for a concussion, passed the sideline protocol, then came back in for Trubisky and suffered a hamstring injury late in the fourth quarter. The Bears elected to throw the ball in the final minute of a 25-0 loss to the Browns, with Trubisky put in harm’s way. He was hit twice near the end of the game, including on a sack on the final play.

Meanwhile, where was Sanchez? His very purpose on this team was to protect Trubisky in case he wasn’t ready for action. There was an inverse effect in this preseason game, with the fourth-string quarterback Shaw forced to leave the game and Trubisky thrust onto the field.

It seems Sanchez’s place with the Bears could be in jeopardy entering this weekend’s cut-down deadline, which occurs at 3 p.m. CT on Saturday. With Trubisky’s development to this point well ahead of schedule, the Bears must ask themselves if Sanchez is still needed.

“Mark’s a great teammate,” Fox said of Sanchez. “He’s been tremendous for both our younger quarterbacks. He’s got the most experience of that room, so I think he brings a lot to the table as far as helping those other quarterbacks.”

Sanchez has played in 77 NFL games and started 72, leading the Jets to the AFC Championship in each of his first two seasons. Starter Mike Glennon has played in 21 games, while Shaw has played and started in just one.

Despite the respect for the veteran Sanchez, Fox wouldn’t commit to keeping him past Saturday’s cuts.

“Those are decisions we’re going to have to make,” he said. “I love that. But we have yet to make that decision.”

Levine: Cubs’ Addison Russell Expected To Be Out 3 More Weeks

By Bruce Levine–

CHICAGO (CBS) — Although the news on the field has been great for the surging Cubs, the bad news was the report from the clubhouse. late Thursday.

Shortstop Addison Russell will be out upward of three more weeks after aggravating his right foot injury during a rehab stint at Triple-A Iowa. Russell has plantar fasciitis, the team said, and an MRI confirmed he’ll essentially have to start over in his rehab as he works back.

Russell hasn’t played in a big league game since Aug. 2.

“This is about just getting him ready,” manager Joe Maddon said. “We don’t know how this will play out. He is injured. We will get him well. There is nothing to project upon with him right now. We need to get him well.”

Javier Baez has taken over as the everyday shortstop and played some of the best baseball of his young career. Meanwhile, Russell has struggled for stretches this season, hitting .241 with 10 homers, 36 RBIs and a .722 OPS in 97 games.

Infielder Mike Freeman will be called up from Triple-A on Friday, proving an option for the Cubs to give Baez a break here and there.

Late Thursday, the Cubs made another roster move, acquiring outfielder Leonys Martin in a trade with the Mariners. Chicago will send back cash or a player to be named later.

Martin is hitting .174 this season and had been at Triple-A Tacoma. He has 114 career stolen bases and can provide speed off the Cubs bench in September.

Bears Leave Mitchell Trubisky Exposed In 4th Quarter Of Preseason Finale

Browns Shut Out Bears In Preseason Finale, 25-0

CHICAGO (AP) — Mitchell Trubisky got an opportunity to start and little chance to show what he can do, completing just two passes for the Chicago Bears in a 25-0 preseason-ending loss to the Cleveland Browns on Thursday night.

Trubisky started with Mike Glennon and veteran Mark Sanchez resting for the opener against Atlanta next week. But after dazzling at times with his play in the preseason and sparking a quarterback controversy in Chicago, he simply didn’t get to make many throws in this game.

The No. 2 overall pick and Cleveland-area product completed 2 of 5 passes for 10 yards against the team that drafted defensive end Myles Garrett first. Both completions and four attempts came on his fourth possession, early in the second quarter, before giving way to Connor Shaw.

Trubisky did nothing but hand off as Chicago went three-and-out on its first three drives, drawing boos from restless fans. He re-entered the game twice in the closing minutes, first coming in for two plays when Shaw briefly returned to the sideline.

A scrambling Shaw then appeared to twist his left leg while being tackled near the sideline on his second play back, forcing the Bears to bring in Trubisky again.

Cody Kessler had a solid first half with the Browns holding out second-round pick DeShone Kizer and Brock Osweiler, completing 11 of 19 passes for 144 yards despite steady pressure. He was sacked three times but threw a 27-yard touchdown to Rannell Hall in the second quarter.

Kevin Hogan started the third period and went 13 of 18 for 180 yards and two touchdowns. He hit a wide-open Randall Telfer for a 51-yard TD late in the quarter and threw a 21-yarder to Jordan Leslie early in the fourth. That made it 25-0, and Cleveland tuned up for its opener against Pittsburgh with a lopsided victory.

The win came during a busy week for the Browns, who cut two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Joe Haden and traded disappointing offensive lineman Cam Erving to Kansas City.

They are also in the market for a receiver and might release Osweiler if they can’t find someone to absorb at least part of his guaranteed $16 million contract.

POSITION BATTLES

Browns: Zane Gonzalez, competing for the kicking job with Cody Parkey, nailed a 53-yard field goal that made it 10-0 in the third quarter. But he also hit the upright on an extra-point attempt in the fourth.

INJURY UPDATE

Browns: Backup left tackle Rod Johnson left in the first half with a knee injury.

Bears: LB Lamarr Houston left with a knee injury in the third quarter. He was in a crowd trying to make a tackle on a pass and stayed down for several minutes before walking to the sideline. Houston tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in 2014 and tore his left ACL in the second game last year.

UP NEXT

Browns: Hosts Pittsburgh on Sept. 10.

Falcons: Host Atlanta on Sept. 10.

Private West Side School Is Free, Offers Lifetime Lessons

(CBS) — A private middle school on Chicago’s West Side prepares students for a lifetime of success.

CBS 2’s Dana Kozlov reports.

At the Chicago Jesuit Academy in the Austin neighborhood, students are called mister.

The eighth-graders are assigned specific roles.

“You’re supposed to be a leader at the school and take care of the little ones,” eighth-grader James McGee says.

The students have two things in common: They live on the West Side and attend for free.

“It’s not about the money. The money has been taken out of the equation,” says parent Armario Hill.

Matthew Lynch helped start CJA 13 years ago as a way to prepare students for college-prep high schools and later success in life.

Students must have passed their last grade and qualified for free or reduced lunch to attend the grades 3-8 academy.

They may leave after eighth grade, but the staff stays with them for years to come.

Ninety percent of CJA’s first class are either college graduates, in college, in the military or working full-time.

The one thing you’ll hear over and over again from students and staff is how nurturing the environment is.

“I know for a fact a lot of these kids don’t get to hear ‘I love you’ when they get home. And to hear that right when they walk in the building at 7:30, it’s great,” alum Julian Wicks says.

Cubs Extend Winning Streak To 4 With 6-2 Victory Over Braves

CHICAGO (AP) — Kyle Hendricks turned in his fourth straight quality start and the Chicago Cubs ran their winning streak to four with a 6-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Thursday night.

Hendricks (6-4) allowed one earned run on five hits while striking out five and walking three in 6 2/3 innings as the reigning World Series champs maintained their 3 1/2-game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central.

Kris Bryant hit his 25th home run of the season and Jon Jay had four hits to lead the Cubs offense. Bryant doubled and scored in the two-run first inning before blasting a two-run shot through a stiff wind in the sixth.

Hendricks was backed by Brian Duensing, Carl Edwards and Justin Wilson, who combined on 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.

Rookie left-hander Sean Newcomb (2-8) took the loss, allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out seven and walking three in five innings.

Pinch-hitter Lane Adams hit his second career home run to chase Hendricks with two outs in the seventh. The Braves other run off Hendricks in the fifth was unearned.

SCRATCHED

Braves infielder Brandon Phillips was a late scratch from the lineup. Jace Peterson replaced him at third base.

BIG MONTH

With his RBI ground out in the first inning, Anthony Rizzo became the first Cubs player to drive in 30 runs in a calendar month since Sammy Sosa did so in August of 2001.

TIME CHANGE

The Cubs received Major League Baseball’s approval to move their Sept. 8 game against the Milwaukee Brewers from 1:20 p.m. to 7:05 p.m.

The city of Chicago also had to sign off on the time change because Friday night games have been prohibited since lights were installed at Wrigley Field in 1988. The Cubs play a night game in Pittsburgh on Sept. 7.

6-MAN TURN

With LHP Jon Lester (left lat tightness and shoulder fatigue) set to return from the disabled list against the Braves on Saturday, Cubs manager Joe Maddon said he will go with six starters for one turn through the rotation.

LHP Mike Montgomery, who allowed one run on 10 hits in 13 innings while winning both his starts in Lester’s stead, will get at least one more on Sunday. Maddon said no decision has been made past then.

SEPT. 1 CALL-UPS

LHP Rex Brothers, LHP Ian Krol and RHP Luke Jackson will rejoin the Braves when rosters expand on Friday. All three are on the 10-day disabled list.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Braves: INF Johan Camargo (bruised right knee), INF Adonis Garcia (torn left ring finger ligament) and OF Danny Santana (strained left quad) will spend the weekend on rehab assignments at Triple-A Gwinnett . A CT scan on C Tyler Flowers (sore left wrist) revealed no structural damage.

Cubs: The team was awaiting the results of an MRI on SS Addison Russell’s right foot. Russell was called back to Chicago from Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday after experiencing a setback in his recovery from a strained right foot.

UP NEXT

Jon Lackey (10-10, 4.98 ERA) will oppose fellow RHP Mike Foltynewicz (10-10, 4.84) in the second game of the four-game series on Friday. The Cubs had won Lackey’s previous eight starts before he was tagged for five runs in the fifth inning of their 6-3 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on August 27. Foltynewicz has allowed 19 earned runs in his last 13 innings on the road.

2 Investigators: Ailing Senior Tricked In Mortgage Modification Scam

(CBS) — She’s on the brink of losing her home.

All she needed was a loan modification to lower her monthly payments, but the people she turned to for help just took her money. As 2 Investigator Pam Zekman reports, she was the victim of a growing scam.

Daily life is a struggle for 71-year-old Bobbie Thomas-Reed.

“I am not physically able to move,” she says. “I can’t do anything for myself.”

She requires kidney dialysis, oxygen and has trouble walking. When her children moved away from home, she needed help paying her mortgage.

“I figured that if I could lower my mortgage it would make it easier for me,” Thomas-Reed says.

That’s when a letter promising help seemed like an answer to all her problems. The letter promised to reduce her monthly mortgage payments to $573.

Thomas-Reed says she was excited by the prospect.

The company is called Direct Processing USA.

“In order to get the modification they would need $2,800,” Thomas-Reed recalled.

Thomas-Reed paid half of the upfront fee, but the company never modified her loan.

Chase Bank, which serviced her loan, told Thomas- Reed she was being scammed. But by then she was several months behind on her mortgage payments and is now facing foreclosure.

“This is my everything, I’m getting stressed even talking to you,” she says. “I’m getting a headache because this is all I have.”

Direct Processing USA has an F rating with the Better Business Bureau. The owners, who have also operated under the name “National Servicing Center,” have been issued cease and desist orders from both Oregon and Washington for defrauding mortgage customers.

The scammers find their targets by trolling public real estate web sites to see whose behind on their mortgage or facing foreclosure.

“They know when people are in trouble, they know when they can’t afford it, they know when they’re behind in their mortgage,” says Steve Bernas of the Chicago Better Business Bureau.

Bernas says mortgage modification fraud is a perennial problem for customers who contact the Better Business Bureau.

“If they ask you for up front money for a loan modification — that’s what we would call the tip off to the rip off,” Bernas says.

Thomas-Reed says she would love to confront the scammers:

“I think I would lose my religion, I would tell him a thing or two because he has really destroyed my life.”

The telephone numbers listed for Direct Processing USA have been disconnected.  After the 2 Investigators contacted Chase Bank, they reached out to Thomas-Reed and are reviewing her request for a loan modification.

The Illinois Attorney General is also looking into this as a possible case of fraud.

White Sox Trade Miguel Gonzalez To Rangers

(CBS) It took until the 11th hour, but the White Sox have traded right-hander Miguel Gonzalez.

Chicago dealt Gonzalez to the Texas Rangers late Thursday night, ahead of Friday’s deadline for postseason roster eligibility. The White Sox received 21-year-old minor league infielder Ti’Quan Forbes in return.

Forbes is hitting .234 with 11 homers, 45 RBIs and 56 runs in 130 games at Class-A this season. He’s primarily played third base but also has played first base and shortstop. He was rated as the top defensive third basemen in the South Atlantic League in 2016. The Rangers selected him in the second round of the 2014 amateur draft.

The 33-year-old Gonzalez was 7-10 with a 4.31 ERA in 22 starts this season, his second with the White Sox. He wasn’t moved ahead of the non-waiver trade deadline back in July, but his exit was widely expected as the White Sox continue their rebuild in season in which they’ve dealt Jose Quintana, David Robertson, Melky Cabrera, Todd Frazier and others.

Bears’ Lamarr Houston, Victor Cruz Injured In Preseason Finale

By Chris Emma–

CHICAGO (CBS) — Lamarr Houston and Victor Cruz, two vested veterans fighting for roles with the Bears, left Thursday’s preseason with injuries.

The Bears ruled out Houston with a knee injury and stated Cruz as questionable to return with a knee injury.

Houston suffered a torn ACL during the second game of last season. He also suffered a torn ACL during the 2014 season.

Houston was playing out the second half because the Bears are lacking depth at outside linebacker, while Cruz has found himself working for a roster spot ahead of Saturday’s cut-down deadline.

Coach John Fox will update the statuses of both players after the game.

Measure Would Crack Down On Businesses That Buy Stolen Smart Phones

(CBS) — The Chicago City Council’s Public Safety Committee has approved a measure designed to crack down on businesses that try to re-sell stolen mobile phones.

WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore reports from City Hall.

Anthony Riccio, who heads the Police Department’s Organized Crime Division, says the ordinance would require pawnbrokers and second-hand phone dealers to check a stolen cellphone database before purchasing a phone. It also would require them to keep more extensive records and issue detailed receipts.

Riccio says the aim of the ordinance is to remove the value of stolen cellphone by making them harder — or riskier – to resell.

Second hand-dealers would face fines if they don’t comply with the law.

Sponsoring Ald. Emma Mitts says something needs to be done to cut down on strong-arm thefts of cellphones. She says people are being killed or hurt over cell phones every day.

The measure easily passed in committee and now goes to the full City Council. It’s backed by Mayor Emanuel, whose teenaged son was mugged for a cellphone.

Close Call For Toddler Who Crawls Away From Daycare

(CBS) — Police in Oswego say a 1 1/2-year-old boy crawled through a hole in a fence at a day care center and a good Samaritan grabbed him before he reached traffic.

Eyewitness Kim Nieto says the baby was about 10 feet from moving vehicles.

“Thankfully that man, whoever he was, truly saved that baby’s life,” she tells WBBM Newsradio. “Because had he made it to the street, I’m not sure what could’ve happened. Those cars move fast on that road. It’s a busy road.”

DCFS says it’s investigating the incident at the Kiddie Academy on Douglas Road in Oswego.

Police say it happened about 10:15 a.m. Thursday.

A police spokeswoman says Kiddie Academy told police the fence has now been repaired.

WBBM has tried to reach a spokesperson for the day care center.

By Cody Westerlund–

(CBS) With a focus on player development now amid a rebuilding process, the Bulls made a series of moves to their basketball operations staff Thursday.

Chicago has hired Shawn Respert as its director of player development. He has spent the past four seasons with the Grizzlies, for whom he was a scout and assistant coach. Prior to that, he worked as an assistant coach with a focus on player development for the Timberwolves for three seasons.

“His knowledge of the game and track record in player development are a great fit for our team,” Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg said in a statement. “He is respected in the NBA, and I know he is excited to begin working with our players.”

Respert played in the NBA from 1995 to 1999. He attended Michigan State.

I am excited to join an organization that has such a storied tradition like the Bulls,” Respert said in a statement.” I am also thankful to have the chance to work with Fred Hoiberg and the rest of his staff. Levine: Cubs To Add 4 Players When Rosters Expand Friday

By Bruce Levine-

CHICAGO (CBS) — MLB rosters expand Friday, when teams can add any number of players they wish who are on their 40-man roster.

The Cubs will promote reliever Justin Grimm, catcher Victor Caratini, right-hander Dillon Maples and infielder Mike Freeman. Maples hasn’t appeared in a big league game yet, while the Cubs recently scooped up Freeman on a minor league deal after he was with the Dodgers earlier this season.

Those additions will take place Friday morning. To add Maples and Freeman, the Cubs must open two spots on their 40-man roster.

September roster expansion is criticized in some circles, as the odd month can change the equation of games. Specifically, it can help provide cover for teams with bad bullpens, allowing them to match up better. Teams that are hopelessly out of the playoff race can match up well nearly every batter from the sixth inning on just by adding a handful of relievers to their bullpen.

“I am all in favor of extended rosters,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. “I just don’t think it should be over 30. It is becoming a pretty common thought that it is OK to expand but limit the number on a nightly basis. The biggest part of that is the bullpen matchups. That factor really shows up when you are playing a team who isn’t in it. They can just keep matching up to lefties and righties until you are matched up to oblivion. They can expand to 40 men. I don’t care as long as they limit the number active each night that you must declare before the game.”

The Cubs will rely on the same players who have helped them build a 3.5-game lead in the NL Central entering play Thursday night. The difference is that in blowouts, they’ll have extra players to use and rest some of the regulars.

“The last month of the season is kind of a year into itself,” Cubs catcher Alex Avila said. “The atmosphere is almost like spring training only the games mean a lot. With new players means more preparation and reading scouting reports.”

Avila agrees with Maddon about limiting rosters to a certain number of active players each game.

“Each team should have a limit on a particular day,” Avila said. “I don’t think it is fair if one team has 32 players and the other has 28. They should have a certain amount that is equal or a limit each game. I heard people suggest you can only have 30 men on the roster each game and be able to change them each series. It definitely should be looked at.”

Chicago Suburb Offers Homes To Hurricane Victims

(CBS) — The Chicago suburb of Harvey has an unusual offer to help victims of Hurricane Harvey and the flooding that occurred in Texas.

CBS 2’s Dorothy Tucker reports on offers of free houses, no strings attached.

Harvey is offering 10 free homes to families that have been displaced in Texas.

“It may not be the White House, but it sure beats being under water right now,” city spokesman Sean Howard says.

The people of Harvey are also pitching in. Local businessmen lined up behind the mayor to pledge cash.

Residents donated water, responding to the city’s call to fill three trucks with needed supplies.

Harvey homeowner Leah Muhammad is among the givers.

“It’s them today but it could be me or you tomorrow,” she says.

Francine Key plans to donate bags of used clothing and shoes to hurricane victims.

Her nephew, Dennis Isoms, is among those forced to stay in shelters.

“That’s not how people want to live,” Key says of the rough conditions.

Harvey officials are asking the public to drop off supplies at the corner of Sibley and Dixie Highway. Police will be patrolling the lot around the clock.

Volunteers from Harvey will drive donated trucks to Houston early next week.

Former NU President Remembers The Late Princess Diana

CHICAGO (CBS) — On the 20th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death, there was a massive out pour of love Thursday in London.

During her short life, she visited Chicago only once.

And as CBS 2’s Vince Gerasole reports, those memories are still fresh today as the world remembers the “People’s Princess.”

On the day of her death in Chicago, a memorial popped up to the People’s Princess, where memories of her visit a year earlier were still very much alive.

“It was the most exciting day of our lives at work.”

For three days in June of 1996 Chicago was her enchanted kingdom, where the celebrity princess has no problem breaking away from formal events to speak with the throngs of people who turned out to see her.

“I didn’t even know that people would resonate so strongly to her visit,” said Henry Bienen, President Emeritus Northwestern University.

Henry Bienen was president of Northwestern University, at the time, which sponsored her visit.

“She was professional about what she did and at the same time she was a very nice person,” he said.

“I wish you all the strength to continue in your most important work,” Princess Diana said during her visit.

The Princess came to Chicago to raise money for cancer research, but beyond attending galas, she took time, lots of time to quietly meet with patients.

“People with cancer give up. Well there’s always hope,” Princess Diana said.

Those interactions with patients, those moments with the crowds, turned out to be her lasting legacy as the “People’s Princess.”

“I think she made up her mind. She had the capacity to do good in the world by virtue of her stature and position and her huge public image and was determined to do so,” Bienen said.

“Thank you all for being so kind to me and showing such generous spirit and perhaps our paths will cross again,” Princess Diana said.

Diana wore a purple gown to a gala at the Field Museum, and it’s often listed as one of her more iconic dresses.

She was also photographed a year later in London wearing Northwestern sweatpants. President Beienen exchanged emails with her at the time, where she indicated her interest in returning to Chicago.

Hurricane Harvey Help From Chicago Charitable Drives Continues

CHICAGO (CBS) — There have been many offers to help victims of Hurricane Harvey, from sending water and food, to clothing and money.

But two other charitable drives in the Chicago area caught CBS 2’s eye: for paint and prose.

CBS 2’s Lauren Victory has more.

From pails of old paint to barrels of renewed beauty, a Schaumburg non-profit is adding Hurricane Harvey victims to its pallet of donations.

“One of the last things you need is paint, mot people forget how much paint you are going to need in every facility to make the place look like it did before the storms,” said Chris McCarthy, found of Earth Paint.

The first Earth Paint shipment to Texas will be worth $25,000. That is 1,000 gallons, two or three weeks of work.

It is a labor of love.

“We’re recycling the paint properly and all of our employees are special needs adults,” McCarthy said.

Earth Paint is hosting a paint drive on September 23 in 243 E. Northeast Hwy Palatine. Anyone with unwanted paint in their basements/garages is encouraged to drop it off and it will get recycled and passed on to Harvey victims. You can also drop off paint every Thursday between the hours of 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. at their warehouse in Schaumburg at 509 E State Pkwy. More information can be found at earthpaint.org

But the efforts do not stop there…

Students in Richton Park are helping victims of Harvey.

The students held a fundraiser on Thursday that bought more than 15,000 water bottles. The donation was facilitated by Marjorie’s Love Senior Meal Foundation. They are headed to Texas with that big water load and food. They are looking for help with cots and blankets for another trip next week. More information can be found on the foundation’s Facebook page.

In addition the Southland College Prep students wrote 3,500 letters of support to be sent to the South.

One student told CBS 2 she hopes her letter reaches a freshman to show that someone the victim’s age cares.

Administrators said they are working to coordinate that and future fundraisers with Houston’s school district.

Rauner Signs Education Funding Bill

(CBS) – It was a rare image: the governor and mayor together at a public appearance. But they didn’t exactly get close

At an event to celebrate a school funding measure, the two didn’t appear to talk or shake hands.

CBS 2 Political Reporter Derrick Blakley has more.

After criss-crossing the state, bashing the school funding bill he vetoed as a Chicago Public Schools bailout, this is what Gov. Rauner had to say Thursday:

“It has been an honor for me to work for Chicago Public Schools and all of the schools across the state of Illinois.”

In signing the compromise school funding bill, the governor gave the green light to a CPS windfall — about $450 million in new state funding. That’s $150 million more than the bill Rauner vetoed.

“This is a good compromise bill that moves the state forward and makes sure every child in the state of Illinois has an equal chance at a great education,” Rauner said.

The measure is historic in that it raises Illinois’ school funding levels and directs more state aid to the poorest districts.

And for Chicago schools, Mayor Emanuel was more than happy to cash the bigger check from Springfield.

“A lots of skeptics said this day would never happen. Today we’re choosing students over a failed status quo,” Emanuel said.

Statewide Poll Reveals New Statistics On Illinois’ Opioid Epidemic

CHICAGO (CBS) — Shocking new statistics have been released about the opioid epidemic.

The National Safety Council released Thursday findings of a statewide poll on the opioid epidemic in Illinois. The council polled 1,000 Illinoisans to gauge their awareness of the opioid epidemic, understand how they use prescription drugs, and whether they are confident they can spot abuse and misuse, among other things.

The findings showed that one in three people in Illinois have been directly impacted by opioid use. Yet 41 percent of those polled are not concerned about addiction happening in their family.

CBS 2’s Roseanne Tellez has more from Itasca where a rally is underway to call attention to a growing crisis.

The event ties in with International Overdose Awareness Day.

And there are two important takeaways – this can happen to you and there is hope.

“I think I started how most teens do, in the party scene,” said Jessica Gerke.

32-year-old Jessica Gerke was addicted to heroin by the time she was 18.

“That is the time I had that emotional bottom was in a jail cell,” she said.

Today, eight years off of drugs, she works at a treatment center, but said the problem is far worse.

“In the last five years I’ve seen deaths weekly or two times a week, three a week,” Gerke said.

The National Safety Council said in 2016, 2,350 Illinoisans died of drug overdoses, 80 percent attributed to heroin and opioids. Forty-five percent of those addicted, like former NBA player Rex Champman said it started with legal prescriptions.

“I wasn’t a partier, drinker or smoker,” Chapman said. “I had an emergency appendectomy. Doctors gave me a prescription for Oxycontin for a month.”

He said he knew he was addicted in three days and when he finally sought help?

“When I went in taking 40 Vicodin a day and eight Oxycontin a day,” Chapman said.

Both Gerke and Chapman recovered from their addictions. But they said there is no magic word to get your loved one to treatment. They recommend you do your research and show compassion, because as they put it, no one wants this.

Houston-Chicago Flights Resume

(CBS) – As more flights arrive in Chicago from Houston, we continue to hear stories from those who experienced the wrath of Hurricane Harvey.

Former Bulls player Isaiah Canaan was one of the passengers on the United flight that arrived at 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

“I’ve never seen it rain days straight, sunup to sundown,” he said. “Once it started, I was waiting to see when it was going to stop.”

His girlfriend shot images showing the aftermath in the neighborhood in which they own a home. It is 20 minutes south of downtown Houston.

“We had to sit around and be inside a couple days,” he says.

It was a similar experience for Erica Lee, a Houston resident now in Chicago visiting her sister.

“We couldn’t get anywhere for three or four days, and then we could finally get out,” Lee says.

For others, like Sonia Francis, her final destination was still distant.

She was trying to get to St. Louis, and planned on renting a car.

There are a few scheduled flights to Houston from Chicago. The Houston airports are starting to get back to normal. They may have full service by this weekend.

Reports: Bulls Acquire Quincy Pondexter, 2nd-Round Pick From Pelicans

(CBS) The Bulls on Thursday acquired guard Quincy Pondexter from the Pelicans, according to multiple reports.

The move is a salary dump for New Orleans, which will also send a 2018 second-round pick to Chicago, CSN Chicago’s Vincent Goodwill reported. The 29-year-old Pondexter is owed $3.85 million in the final year of his contract. The Bulls have ample room to absorb Pondexter’s contract, in the form of cap space or a $15 million trade exception that was acquired in the deal that sent Jimmy Butler to the Timberwolves, whichever they choose.

Pondexter has missed the entirety of the last two seasons because of serious left knee injuries that necessitated three surgeries. He’s a career 36.5 percent 3-point shooter.

Pondexter doesn’t project to be a member of the rotation as the rebuilding Bulls turn their attention to developing young players. It’s unclear whether they intend to even keep Pondexter or waive him.

White Sox Squander Lead In 9th, Fall To Twins

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Max Kepler was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Minnesota Twins rallied to beat the Chicago White Sox 5-4 Thursday for their fourth straight win.

Trailing 4-3 entering their final at-bat at Target Field, the Twins came back and held their slim lead for the second AL wild-card spot. The Twins completed a three-game sweep with their first hop-off win since current Minnesota manager Paul Molitor was plunked in the 10th at the Metrodome in 1996 to beat Kansas City.

Pinch-hitter Ehire Adrianza opened the ninth with an infield single off closer Juan Minaya (2-2). After a one-out walk, Eddie Rosario hit a tying single.

Joe Mauer then walked to load the bases and Jorge Polanco lined back to Minaya. With the crowd on its feet, Minaya’s first pitch hit Kepler in the front foot for the winning run.

Alen Hanson hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth to give the White Sox a 4-3 lead. He connected off Matt Belisle (1-2).

Should The NFL Shorten The Preseason?

By Matt Citak

The question is not a new one. For over half a decade, the NFL and the NFL Players Association have discussed decreasing the number of preseason games. Back in 2011 during negotiations that led to the  labor deal between the league and the union following a three-month lockout, the owners proposed cutting the preseason in half from four games to two games per team. However, they wanted to take those two games and add them to the regular season, extending it from 16 to 18 games. The player’s union strongly opposed this idea on the grounds of player-safety. The league eventually dropped the proposal and said moving forward, it would not change the length of the regular season without the consent of the players.

A few years have passed since then, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is once again discussing the possibility of shortening the preseason.

“When I go around to fans, that’s maybe the No. 1 thing I hear,” Goodell said to a group of New York Giants season-ticket holders during a fan forum earlier this month regarding the preseason being too long. “The NFL should do things to the highest possible standards. Preseason games are not that…. There’s value to them, building a team, evaluating players. But there are other ways of doing that. I think we could do it in three [games]. Almost every coach has agreed we could get done what we need to in three games.”

The biggest reason for decreasing the number of preseason games is because of the significant injuries that seem to occur each year before the regular season kicks off. The Seahawks starting left tackle Goerge Fant, the Bears number one wide receiver Cameron Meredith, and the Patriots star receiver Julian Edelman were all lost for the season due to torn ACL’s suffered during preseason games this past month. The Chiefs’ starting running back Spencer Ware is likely to miss the entire 2017 season after tearing his PCL and LCL, while Cowboys starting linebacker Anthony Hitchens will sit out half the season after fracturing his tibial plateau. Both injuries occurred during Week 3 of the preseason.

When asked about it at CBS’ NFL Media Day, some of the network’s on-air talent agreed the preseason should be shortened.

“I thought there should have been a decrease years ago…” said broadcaster Greg Gumbel. “To me, there is nothing more depressing, as a broadcaster, as a fan, and I’m sure members of a team feel the same way: there’s nothing more depressing than losing a player in a meaningless game. To have a Julian Edelman out for the entire season in a game that doesn’t mean a thing… Coaches may say, and they probably are partly right, that they need it in order to be able to assess a team. You don’t need to assess Julian Edelman. He doesn’t need to play. I think the only guy that might really need the reps, and not that many, is the quarterback. But I agree with it. I agree they should cut it down.”

“I kind of agree with it. I think four is too extensive of an amount,” said CBS sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson. “I think teams can hold practices, they can hold live scrimmages with other teams, and they can get a little bit more out of those. I think these games, you know the young players on these teams that are trying to make the team are going to go play all-out. They’re trying to prove themselves, and unfortunately for veterans in their way, someone is going to get hurt over it…

“I think you try and find other ways to get that experience, to get these young players reps and ways of looking at these young players. But I think four is way too long. I can see them cutting it to three and adding some live scrimmages… You can’t do away with it completely because these coaches need to evaluate the young players that are coming in. But I would agree that they should shorten the preseason.”

While preseason games are certainly to blame for causing some significant injuries before the start of the actual season, training camp practices have produced the same results. The Dolphins suffered a devastating blow during a practice session in early August when starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill went down with a torn ACL, an injury that will cost the young QB the season. This happened just under a year after the Vikings watched starting quarterback Teddy Bridgewater crumble to the ground with a non-contact injury to his left leg during practice that, one year later, he is still attempting to recover from. Jets number one receiver Quincy Enunwa aggravated a neck injury during seven-on-seven drills in early August and will not see the field until 2018, while Colts starting center Ryan Kelly won’t return until the middle of the season after injuring his foot during training camp a few weeks ago.

While some believe decreasing the number of preseason games will help limit preseason injuries, it seems quite clear that this is not necessarily the case.

“I’ve heard it a lot of different ways from coaches. It’s definitely one of those things we talk to teams about those first few weeks of every NFL season,” said Jamie Erdahl, a CBS sideline reporter. “I’ve heard a ton of different opinions. The injuries are so unfortunate, but we’ve also seen significant ones in practice. So I don’t know if you can blame the actual games for the significant injuries that have piled up. I think they’re going to happen regardless because the guys, whether you like it or not, they need those game-speed reps before they hit the regular season. Or else the product is just going to be brutal to watch come Week 1.”

gettyimages 8393382441 e1504213149548 Should The NFL Shorten The Preseason?

Credit: Otto Greule Jr/Getty Images

Erdahl is right in that players need to play at full-speed in a game before the start of the regular season. As former safety Adam Archuleta noted, players need a game or two to get on the field and show themselves that, after not participating in a real game for six or seven months, they can still tackle, catch, defend, etc. While practice definitely helps prepare guys for the start of the season, it does not yield the same result as playing in an actual game, against a different team, in front of thousands of screaming fans.

In addition to getting used to the flow of a real game, the preseason is also important for the development of young players. Undrafted rookie free agents do not get many opportunities to prove themselves worthy of a roster spot. They need the preseason to show the coaching staff what they’re capable of. Just look at a guy like Victor Cruz. The receiver out of UMass went undrafted in the 2010 NFL Draft and signed with the Giants the following day. Cruz likely would not have made the team had it not been for his amazing performance in the preseason. He caught six passes for 145 yards and three touchdowns in one game against the Jets, and finished the preseason tied for the most receiving yards in the NFL with 297. Cruz made the Giants 53-man roster, and one year later, was second-team All-Pro after catching 82 passes for 1,536 yards and nine touchdowns while helping New York win the Super Bowl.

Former Coach of the Year and Super Bowl champion Bill Cowher strongly believes the NFL should leave the preseason format how it is.

“I absolutely love four games, because I think shortening it takes away the ability to develop players,” said Cowher. “Our league now, because of all the restrictions you have with practices and everything else, I think we have hindered development of players. The only way they can develop is if they play. This fourth game that’s being played this week, you have a lot of backup players playing that at some point, you might need them to play integral parts of your team’s playoff run because you had a starter go down. Where else do you get the experience instead of games?

gettyimages 160348952 e1504208544646 Should The NFL Shorten The Preseason?

Credit: Scott Halleran/Getty Images

“So I love the fact that they left the roster where it’s at, one cut down to 53, and let these guys play this week. These are guys that are going to be the future. The quarterbacks, where else are they going to get the experience? We’re always trying to develop quarterbacks. But even to develop offensive linemen, developing receivers, developing defensive backs- they have to play the game. You have to see them when the bullets are flying. I think cutting it down to three games would hinder the development of some of the players that are going to be the future of this league.”

One thing to keep in mind is that football is an incredibly physical sport. When you have 53 men on each team hitting each other as hard as they can for 60 minutes, players are bound to get hurt. The question is, does it really matter if the injury occurs during Week 4 of the preseason or Week 1 of the regular season? If a team loses its starting quarterback for the season during the regular season opener, does it make them feel any better than if the quarterback went down during the preseason? Significant injuries will always hurt a team, no matter when they occur.

“Teams feel just as badly if a star player goes out in the first half of the first regular season game,” said CBS broadcaster Ian Eagle. “When Vinny Testaverde went down for the Jets, a year in which they were supposed to be a legitimate Super Bowl team, nobody felt any better because it happened in regular season action. Injuries are a tough pill to swallow. So while I understand where the fury comes from, that this happened in a “meaningless” game, if it happens in the first game it doesn’t make it any better… Injuries cripple a team.”

The debate over the length of the preseason is one that has been around for a while, and one that is not going away anytime soon. No matter what the league decides, someone will not be happy. If the preseason is shortened, owners will protest about the loss of revenue caused by one less home game, while coaches will be upset about having less time to evaluate their young players fighting for roster spots. If the league keeps the current format, players will complain about risking their bodies for four games that have absolutely no meaning to the season.

With the current collective bargaining agreement between the NFL owners and the NFLPA set to expire prior to the 2021 season, the league has a few more years to try to find a solution to this never-ending debate. If a compromise cannot be made, the preseason format could be one of several issues that eventually lead to an NFL work stoppage.

Woman Posted Video Of Sex Assault On Snapchat: Prosecutors

CHICAGO (CBS) — A Rogers Park woman watched as an over-served romantic rival passed out and was sexually assaulted, and posted part of the attack on the victim’s Snapchat account, Cook County prosecutors said on Thursday.

Beth Rae Harris, 36, had argued with the 23-year-old victim over a “mutual male acquaintance” at a party last week, but the pair eventually cooled off and wound up leaving together to hit a night club and hotel party, Assistant State’s Attorney Nora Gill said at a bond hearing at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse.

From the hotel party, the pair returned to Harris’ apartment, where the heavily intoxicated victim passed out, Gill said. The victim woke up the next morning completely naked, and sore. As she left the apartment, Harris told the victim that a man had sex with her while she was passed out, Gill said.

While the younger woman was unconscious, Harris let an “unidentified man or men sexually assault the victim,” Gill said.

Once at home, the victim discovered that Harris had used the victim’s cell phone to post video on the victim’s Snapchat account, Gill said. In the video, the victim lay naked as an unidentified man grabbed her buttocks and exposed her vagina to the camera, Gill. Harris allegedly can be heard narrating the assault on the video, at one point warning the man not to wake the victim.

Harris also recorded video of herself calling the victim names and claiming the 23-year-old had slapped her, Gill said. Several of the victim’s Snapchat followers saw the video, and one of them identified Harris from a photo, Gill said.

The investigation of the sexual assault is ongoing, Gill said.

Judge James Brown ordered Harris held in lieu of $150,000 bail on a charge of nonconsensual dissemination of sexual images.

Like Its Namesake, John Dillinger Museum Meets Sudden, Shocking End

CHICAGO (CBS) — A northwest Indiana museum dedicated to a popular Depression Era gangster was shut down almost as suddenly as its namesake was taken out leaving a Chicago theater more than 80 years ago.

The John Dillinger Museum in Crown Point, Indiana “permanently closed its doors” at 11 a.m. Thursday, according to the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority, which made the announcement in an online posting.

The museum, which moved to Crown Point from Hammond in the summer of 2015, had “welcomed approximately 20,000 people from around the world, made national headlines, and has been featured on major news networks and the Travel Channel,” according to the statement, which did not give a reason for the closure.

Asked if the move was financial, CVA spokesman Erika Dahl said in an email, “The decision was not made lightly, and we have been very impressed with our attendance numbers.”

The city had hosted a number of special events “to increase visitation at the museum and the city’s downtown, including a public viewing of the infamous wooden gun, screenings of the movie, “Public Enemies,” and special admission promotions,” the CVA statement said.

It obviously wasn’t enough.

“The museum was purchased by our organization in the ’90s with the intent of educating the public and drawing in visitors,” Dahl said. “We feel it did both of those things.”

Asked if the museum might open in another location, she said, “Unfortunately, I do not have any updates at this time on the fate of the museum …”

And asked if the historic collection, purchased by the CVA in the 1990s, would be maintained, or possibly split up and sold, she said: “At this time, I’m not sure. We are open to all possibilities.”

Crown Point Mayor David Uran called the museum “an asset to Crown Point’s downtown as it generated additional foot traffic to our local merchants and brought in visitors from across the nation that may not have normally stopped in Crown Point.

“The museum not only economically helped our city, but it raised the awareness of how law enforcement evolved and made advancements in their crime fighting techniques which created new ways to protect communities,” the mayor said.

The one bright spot in the sudden closing is that no jobs will be lost.

“Our staff also works in our gift shop and welcome center in Hammond,” Dahl said. “They were trained to do all three jobs and would bounce back and forth from location to location.”

Crown Point will still have its Dillinger connection, as he escaped 1933 from the old Lake County Jail, now home to the The Old Sheriff’s House and Jail Museum.

The museum featured historic artifacts from the days of Depression Era gangsters, including photos, clothing, weapons and other items; and also detailed the rise of the FBI during that same period.

The museum also housed a memorial to local law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty.

But the focus, and several rooms of exhibits, were dedicated to Dillinger, perhaps the best-known gangster of that era before he was gunned down outside the Biograph Theater in July 1934, an end just as shocking as that of the museum.

Cubs’ Jake Arrieta On Free Agency: Payday Will Take Care of Itself If ‘I Carry Myself In The Right Way’

(CBS) Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta has never lacked for confidence, but as the postseason nears, he producing the results he’s expected out of himself all along.

In nine starts since the All-Star break, Arrieta is 6-1 with a 1.59 ERA and has held foes to a .189 batting average. In that stretch, Arrieta hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in any outing.

This has all come after he recorded a 4.35 ERA in 18 starts in the season’s first half.

“I’m pitching now like the guy I should’ve been pitching like in the first half,” Arrieta said Thursday in an interview with Dan Bernstein and Jason Goff on 670 The Score. “Some things didn’t go my way. I wasn’t executing that well. I was leaving too many balls in the middle of the strike zone in hitters’ counts. And those are all just little adjustments.”

Arrieta is set to be a free agent in November and his rocky first half, there was some thought that his payday on the open market was going to take a hit. Asked if it’s comforting to being throwing so well as he enters free agency, Arrieta responded that he let his mind wander into that territory.

“Moving forward, I don’t know how many starts I have left, I just really don’t put much thought into that,” Arrieta said. “I just know if I do what I’m supposed to do, I can carry myself in the right way and I perform close to the way I’m capable of, then things will just take care of themselves.”

Police Step Up Traffic Enforcement Over Labor Day Weekend

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Police across the state say they’ll be out in force this Labor Day weekend, and they’re urging motorists not to drink and drive.

Illinois State Police, the Illinois Department of Transportation and nearly 200 local law enforcement agencies are participating in a “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign. They’re conducting roadside safety checks and impaired-driving patrols.

Last year, 23 people died in motor vehicle crashes in Illinois over the holiday weekend. It was the deadliest Labor Day weekend in five years.

Police say anyone who’s out drinking should plan ahead and designate a sober driver.

They’re also asking people to buckle up, and say anyone who sees a driver who may be impaired should promptly report it by calling 911.

Report: City Grants Cubs A One-Time Exception To Move A Friday Game From Afternoon To Night

(CBS) In an effort to help the Cubs out in a difficult scheduling situation, the city has granted the team a one-time exception to the ban on Friday night games at Wrigley Field, allowing them to move the Sept. 8 contest to the evening, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

The Cubs’ game against the Brewers that day was previously set for 1:20 p.m., which presented a short turnaround and tough travel as Chicago has a night game at Pittsburgh the day before. The agreement was reached between the Cubs, local alderman Tom Tunney and mayor Rahm Emanuel.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon time and again has been critical of the Cubs’ number of day games in general, saying it doesn’t allow players to form habits and hurts their rest cycle.

“It’s a compromise,” Tunney told the Sun-Times. “It’s a favor. Coach Madden has his philosophy. I don’t plan to have it a regular occurrence. But it’s something that we’re all trying to work toward to make sure the team gets the proper rest.

“In life, we try to help each other. But I don’t want it to be a regular occurrence because there’s a number of businesses where Friday and Saturday nights are very, very important and they’re non-Cub-related. Theater, fine-dining restaurants that don’t do well when there’s a Cub night game. And Friday and Saturday in many of our businesses are make-it-or-break-it days for their business to stay in business.”

In July, Cubs president of business operations Crane Kenney criticized the city’s rule that limits the Cubs to hosting 35 regularly scheduled night games at Wrigley Field and then eight more floating games for national television purposes. The MLB average is around 54 night home games, Kenney said.

“Quite honestly, it should be lifted at this point,” Kenney said. “We’re one of the few teams that not only has to beat everyone in our division, we also have to beat the city that we play in to try and win games. It’s a very odd situation for us, and it’s one that I got to be honest, four times a year I go to the owners’ meetings, and the other team presidents and owners watch what’s happening in Chicago, and they can’t understand it. Because in those cities, they’re getting new ballpark built for them, and they’re getting street closures and … there’s no night game limitations. They look at Chicago and say they just can’t understand it.

“The real answer is at some point we’d love to not be handicapped, as no other team in baseball is by the number of night games you play. You know, we just keep working on it.”

Villa Park Man Arrested For Trying To Fund Others’ Efforts To Join ISIS

CHICAGO (CBS) — A Villa Park man has been arrested for allegedly conspiring to provide funding to three Brooklyn men who tried to travel to Syria to join terror groups ISIS and al-Nusrah Front, including a man who allegedly wanted to shoot then-President Barack Obama.

Dilshod Khusanov, 31, was arrested Thursday morning in Villa Park, according to federal prosecutors in New York, where the investigation began. He has been indicted on charges of conspiring and attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) and al-Nusrah Front, both designated foreign terrorist organizations.

The feds allege Khusanov – a native of Uzbekistan – was part of a group of people who provided financial support for others seeking to travel from the U.S. to Syria to join Isis or al-Nusrah. Six other people involved in the scheme were indicted earlier, and three of them have pleaded guilty to charges of conspiring to provide material support to ISIS.

Federal prosecutors said the investigation began in 2014, when Abdurasul Juraboev, one of Khusanov’s alleged co-conspirators, posted on an Uzbek-language website that he wanted to engage in an act of martyrdom in the U.S. on behalf of ISIS. Juraboev allegedly agreed to kill then-President Barack Obama if ordered to.

Juraboev allegedly plotted with Akhror Saidakhmetov to travel to Turkey and Syria to wage violent jihad on behalf of ISIS.

CBS New York reports Juraboev and Saidakhmetov lived together on East 10th Street in Midwood, Brooklyn, and worked together at a Middle Eastern fast food restaurant.

According to the feds, Juraboev posted the following message on an Uzbek website:

“Greetings! We too wanted to pledge our allegiance and commit ourselves while not present there. I am in USA now but we don’t have any arms. But is it possible to commit ourselves as dedicated martyrs anyway while here? What I’m saying is, to shoot Obama then get shot ourselves, will it do? That will strike fear in the hearts of infidels.”

Federal agents became aware of the message and tracked the IP address back to Juraboev’s Brooklyn home. When confronted by agents, Juraboev said he wanted to travel to Syria to fight with ISIS or attack Obama if he could, according to authorities.

Juraboev later said he didn’t have the means or plan to attack Obama, according to authorities.

Authorities said Juraboev also was willing to plant a bomb at Coney Island if ordered to do so.

Saidakhmetov was arrested in February 2015 at John F. Kennedy International Airport, as he was trying to travel to Turkey. According to the feds, Juraboev also had bought a plane ticket to Istanbul, and was scheduled to leave a month later.

The feds had arranged for a confidential informer to befriend the young men, and court documents said the informant recorded Saidakhmetov making a threat against law enforcement.

Saidakhmetov allegedly plotted to buy a machine gun and kill police officers and FBI agents if he was unable to join ISIS in Syria, authorities said.

“I will just go and buy a machine gun, AK-47, go out and shoot all police,” Saidakhmetov said, according to court records. “We will go and purchase one handgun, then go shoot one police officer. Boom. Then, we will take his gun, bullets and a bulletproof vest… then we will do the same with a couple of others. Then we will go to the FBI headquarters, kill the FBI people.”

The informant kept tabs on Juraboev and Saidakhmetov as they visited the travel agency and bought the tickets to Istanbul, authorities said. Saidakhmetov’s itinerary showed he was supposed to take off early Wednesday morning.

Four other men – Abror Habibov, Dilkhayot Kasimov, Azizjon Rakhmatov, and Akmal Zakirov – were charged with helping fund Saidakhmetov’s attempts to join ISIS.

Khusanov and Zakirov allegedly discussed providing their own money to cover Saidakhmetov’s travel expenses, according to the indictment against Khusanov. He also allegedly agreed to raise money from others to fund Saidakhmetov’s travel, and transferred money into Zakirov’s personal bank account to facilitate Saidakhmetov’s attempt to join ISIS.

Doctor: Police Superintendent’s Kidney Transplant Successful

CHICAGO (AP) — Doctors say Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson’s kidney transplant was a success and he is expected to leave the hospital this weekend.

At a Thursday news conference at Rush University Medical Center, doctors said Johnson’s 25-year-old son, who donated his kidney to his father, is expected to leave the hospital Thursday afternoon. Both Johnson and his son are listed in good condition.

Dr. Martin Hertl said Johnson was sitting up in bed and had started answering emails Wednesday night. Hertl and fellow transplant surgeon, Dr. Edward Hollonger Jr., said they expect Johnson to make a full recovery.

And Mayor Rahm Emanuel was spotted paying the top cop a visit on Thursday following his surgery. He did not speak to reporters.

Lakers Fined $500K By NBA For Tampering Involving Paul George

NEW YORK (AP) — New Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka’s contact with Paul George’s agent violated the NBA’s anti-tampering rule and has resulted in Los Angeles being fined $500,000.

The league said Thursday that a law firm’s independent investigation didn’t find evidence of an agreement or an understanding that the Lakers would sign or acquire George, who was with the Indiana Pacers at the time. Paul later was traded to Oklahoma City.

The NBA had warned the Lakers about tampering following comments by president of basketball operations Magic Johnson about George on national TV on April 20.

The league said Pelinka’s contact with George’s agent “constituted a prohibited expression of interest in the player while he was under contract.”

The NBA’s anti-tampering rule prohibits teams from interfering with other teams’ contractual relationships with NBA players.
