Dispute Resolved Over `Rapist’ Priests Gravestone

WHEATON, Ill. (AP) — A man who wanted to install a gravestone at a suburban Chicago cemetery that proclaimed his late mother’s support for victims of “rapist” priests has reached a resolution with a Roman Catholic diocese.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Joliet refused to allow the proposed marker for Marguerite Ridgeway because it included what the diocese called “explicit language.” The diocese owns the suburban Wheaton cemetery where Ridgeway is buried.

But The Chicago Tribune reports Ridgeway’s son, Jack Ruhl of Kalamazoo, Michigan, recently compromised with diocese officials on an alternate epitaph that reads: “She supported priest sexual abuse victims.”

The marker was installed Dec. 22 for the west suburban Lisle woman, who died in 2015.

Diocese spokesman Edward Flavin says church officials are pleased with the resolution and have no further comment.

Northwestern Routs Brown 95-73

ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) — Dererk Pardon scored 18 points to lead Northwestern to a 95-73 victory over Brown on Saturday afternoon.

Scottie Lindsey added 14 points and Bryant McIntosh had 13 for the Wildcats (10-5), who have won five of six. Vic Law and Anthony Gaines added 11 points apiece for Northwestern in its final nonconference game.

Brandon Anderson had 26 points and Desmond Cambridge added 22 for Brown (6-6), which saw its two-game winning streak end.

Law returned to action after he missed the last two games due to a concussion. But the Wildcats lost another player when McIntosh left the game with a possible leg injury early in the second half.

The Wildcats shot 54.1 percent from the field to Brown’s 39.1 percent.

A Cambridge 3-pointer and two Howard free throws put Brown ahead 47-46 with 17:37 left for its first lead since the game’s early minutes.

After a Northwestern missed layup, McIntosh went down holding his knee and exited the game with 17:14 remaining.

The Wildcats used an 8-0 run to retake the lead at 56-55. Their 20-3 run turned a seven-point deficit into a 68-58 lead with 9:05 left. Two Lindsey free throws put Northwestern ahead by 15 with 2:53 to go.

Northwestern has won the last five meetings against Brown and leads the all-time series 8-2.

The Wildcats were ahead 42-37 at halftime after leading by as much as nine.

Northwestern was playing its first game in eight days after falling to No. 12 Oklahoma 104-78.

Northwestern: The Wildcats have had their ups and downs after reaching the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history last season. Notably, they beat Illinois 72-68 in overtime, but they have a pair of lopsided losses to Oklahoma and No. 22 Texas Tech.

Chicago’s Top Cop Draws Inspiration From ‘Book Of Job’

(WBBM Newsradio) — Chicago’s top cop insists he does not stress out over his work, even as he battles to reduce violent crime across the city.

WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore reports from City Hall.

When asked how he copes with being Chicago police superintendent, Eddie Johnson says he relies on his faith.

He says he reads the Book of Job once or twice a month and feels that if Job could deal with his torments, the position of superintendent is child’s play.

“I think God takes us all and builds us for different things,” Johnson says, “and I think he built me to be the police superintendent of the city of Chicago at this time. In terms of stress, I don’t really have any stress. I don’t, because I love this city, I love being the police and I love this job because I can affect a lot of peoples’ lives for the better.”

Bulls’ Zach LaVine Feeling Good, Starts ‘Training Camp’ Stage Of ACL Rehab

CHICAGO (670 The Score) — Bulls guard Zach LaVine has entered what he termed the “training camp” stage of his rehab from left ACL surgery last February.

LaVine on Saturday embarked on the first of what the Bulls have planned to be six straight days of full contact practice for him. LaVine’s next four days of practice will come with the Windy City Bulls of the G League, then he’ll join the Bulls again Thursday.

After that, he’ll be further evaluated and a plan for his season debut could be formulated.

“I feel like it’s the last little bit I got to get through before I’m back out there,” LaVine said. “Attack it and do what I have to do and keep it moving.”

The 22-year-old LaVine acknowledged that his patience has “almost ran out.” He has felt physically strong in his knee for some time and explained that regaining top conditioning is now a focus. With that, he’s expects soreness but not setback.

In a notable development, LaVine has shed his knee brace.

“It’s like adding three pounds on your leg,” said LaVine, who averaged 18.9 points for the Timberwolves last season before his injury . “So I made the decision to not go with it. It’s safe. It’s more between me and the doctor and stuff like that, so I appreciate that.”

The Bulls have discussed the possibility of LaVine first playing in G League games before returning to NBA action. When he does return, he’ll be on a minutes limitation initially.

As he itches to rejoin a rebuilding Bulls team that has gone on a 10-2 tear to improve to 13-22, LaVine feels his voice has carried weight throughout the rehab process. He also understands the caution the organization has exercised, acknowledging the dark history of ACL injuries for former star Derrick Rose.

“We meet every week or two weeks about things,” LaVine said. “I give my opinion. They’ve obviously been through it more than I have with them going to school for it and stuff like that. So I have to give trust in that. I obviously have my opinion on some things that I wouldn’t want to do or not having done. The things I’ve liked doing differently, we’ve changed it. I’m glad it’s a team effort.”

Lisle Bank Robbery Suspect Linked To Other Heists: FBI

(CBS) — A man arrested after allegedly robbing a bank Friday morning in Lisle is suspected of three other suburban bank robberies since November.

About 10:10 a.m., a Lisle Savings Bank branch at 4720 Main Street was robbed, according to FBI spokesman Garrett Croon.

The suspect was then taken into custody, Croon said. He could appear in court as early as Tuesday.

The same man is suspected of a Dec. 19 robbery at the Fifth Third Bank branch at 704 Roosevelt Road in Glen Ellyn; a Dec. 7 robbery at the PNC Bank branch at 9 Ogden Ave. in Naperville; and a Nov. 21 robbery at the Fifth Third Bank branch at 2998 Ogden Ave. in Aurora, according to the FBI.

Flu Cases Surge In Chicago Area

(WBBM Newsradio) – There has been a surge in influenza cases in recent weeks, says one expert, who advises vaccination is still the best defense.

“We’ve seen a noticeable increase not only in the community, but also in patients coming through the hospital with influenza,” says Dr. Robert Citronberg, an infectious disease expert with Advocate Health Care.

Recent reports have suggested the latest flu vaccine may only be 10 percent effective, but Citronberg says it can still help lessen the effects if you get hit.

“It’s still very important to get a flu shot,” Citronberg says.

The flu claims 30,000 deaths each year. Flu season in the Chicago area can last through April.

Four Wounded In New Year’s Weekend Shootings

(CBS) — Four people have been wounded in shootings across Chicago since the start of the New Year’s holiday weekend Friday evening.

The most recent shooting happened about 4:30 a.m. Saturday in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side. A 43-year-old man was standing on the sidewalk in the 3000 block of West Jackson when a man in his 20s approached with a handgun and demanded his property, according to Chicago Police. After stealing the victim’s personal items, the suspect shot him in the left leg and ran away. The victim was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition stabilized.

A 20-year-old man was shot about a 30 minutes earlier in the West Side Austin neighborhood. He was arguing with someone in the 5700 block of West Washington when the other person took out a handgun and fired shots, striking him in the left knee, police said. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition stabilized.

At 10:10 p.m. Friday, a woman was shot in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the West Side. She was driving a car north in the 1000 block of North Campbell when someone fired shots from a gray SUV, striking her in the arm, police said. The woman took herself to Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center, where her condition stabilized.

The weekend’s first shooting happened about 8:30 p.m. Friday in the West Pullman neighborhood on the Far South Side. A man shot a 57-year-old woman in the face and then turned the gun on himself inside a home in the 12500 block of South Emerald, police said. The woman was taken in critical condition to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, and the man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has not confirmed the death.

Last year, six people were killed and 49 others were wounded in Chicago over the New Year’s holiday weekend.
