City To Launch Street Sweeper Tracker Website

CHICAGO (CBS) — The city’s winter overnight parking ban ends this weekend, and street sweeping season begins next week.

This year, Chicago residents will be able to track street sweepers in real time, much like they can track snow plows in winter.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel will unveil the new online tool on Friday.

It will allow people to track where street sweepers are working, and view the latest street sweeping schedule for their neighborhood.

Street sweeping begins Monday. The tracker, www.cityofchicago.org/sweepertracker, will go live later Friday.

Trio Robs Three Men On CTA Red Line Train

CHICAGO (CBS) — Three people were robbed on board a CTA Red Line train overnight in the Lincoln Park neighborhood.

Police and paramedics responded to the Fulllerton stop on the Red Line early Friday morning, after calls of three men who had robbed passengers on a train. One of the victims had been punched in the face.

The robberies happened around 12:45 a.m. on a train heading north from the North/Clybourn subway station to the Fullerton ‘L’ stop.

Police said the three suspects walked up to a 22-year-old man on the train, and one of them implied he had a weapon. One of the suspects then punched the man in the face, and stole his property.

The same three men also approached a 19-year-old man and demanded his belongings. They robbed him and ran away, then walked up to a 41-year-old man and stole his property, before getting off the train at Fullerton, and running east down the street.

Police said the 22-year-old man who was punched was treated at the scene. The other two victims were not injured.

Police did not have detailed descriptions of the robbers.

No one was in custody Friday morning. Area Central detectives were investigating.

Emergency Goalie Pressed Into Action In Blackhawks Win

CHICAGO (AP) — Scott Foster thought it was going to be just another night. Then the 36-year-old accountant signed a contract, put on his goaltender gear and waited in Chicago’s locker room. Then he got into the game.

Then, it was his night.

Foster was pressed into action when Chicago lost Anton Forsberg and Collin Delia to injuries, and the former college goalie stopped all seven shots he faced over the final 14 minutes of the Blackhawks’ 6-2 victory over the playoff-bound Winnipeg Jets on Thursday.

“This is something that no one can ever take away from me,” Foster said. “It’s something that I can go home and tell my kids and they can tell their friends. … Just a ton of fun.”

Foster is part of a crew of recreational goaltenders who staff Chicago’s home games in case of emergencies for either team. But it usually just means a nice dinner and a night in the press box watching the world’s best players compete at hockey’s highest level.

Nothing at all like this.

“What a moment,” Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said with a chuckle.

Forsberg was expected to start, but he got hurt during a “pregame ritual,” according to Quenneville. Delia, who was just recalled from the minors Wednesday, then stopped 25 of 27 shots in his NHL debut before he was helped off the ice with 14:01 left after he cramped up.

Enter Foster, a married father of two who lives in nearby Oak Park and plays in two rec leagues. After a short warmup, the game resumed and Foster got a big cheer from the crowd of 21,839 when he denied Tyler Myers for his first save about a minute after he came in.

“The initial shock happened when I had to dress. I think you just kind of black out after that,” Foster said.

Backed by chants of “Foster! Foster!” and more loud ovations, he made another stop on Myers and turned away Paul Stastny and Dustin Byfuglien in the final minutes. When it was over, the Blackhawks poured onto the ice and mobbed Foster in the net.

“He was great,” defenseman Brent Seabrook said. “I think the boys were doing whatever they could to help him out. He made some big saves. Fun night.”

The Jets had won six in a row and were trying to clinch home-ice advantage for the first round of the playoffs. But even they were moved by what happened.

“It’s tough for anybody to come in 50 minutes into a hockey game, let alone a guy who hasn’t played in the (NHL),” coach Paul Maurice said. “A great moment for him.”

Carolina Hurricanes equipment manager Jorge Alves became the first emergency goalie to play in a game in the modern era last season. He closed out the final 7.6 seconds of a 3-1 loss to Tampa Bay.

The NHL adjusted its rules last summer to mandate that teams have an emergency goalie present for all home games ready to fill in for either team — setting the stage for Foster’s most competitive action since 20 minutes in relief with Western Michigan University in the 2005-06 season.

“A few hours ago I was sitting on the computer typing on a 10-key, and now I’m standing in front of you guys having just finished 14 1/2 minutes of NHL hockey,” he cracked.

It was a wild finish to one of Chicago’s best performances in a lousy season.

Tomas Jurco scored a career-high two goals in Seabrook’s 1,000th regular-season game, and touted prospect Dylan Sikura had two assists in his NHL debut. Patrick Kane, Alex DeBrincat and defenseman Erik Gustafsson each had a goal and an assist, and Brandon Saad also scored.

The 32-year-old Seabrook got the start alongside fellow alternate captain and frequent defensive partner Duncan Keith. He became the fifth player in franchise history to skate in 1,000 or more games for the team, joining Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull, Eric Nesterenko and Bob Murray.

Bryan Little scored his 200th NHL goal for Winnipeg in the opener of a four-game trip. Mark Scheifele also scored for the Jets, and Eric Comrie made 36 saves while subbing for starter Connor Hellebuyck.

“It wasn’t a good night,” Little said. “It wasn’t good from the start. It’s one of those games you want to forget and put behind you and look to the next one.”

Kane got Chicago off to a fast start when he shot it between Comrie’s legs for his 27th goal 3:44 into the first, and the Blackhawks just poured it on from there. Saad made it 2-0 with a nifty move to his backhand in front at 17:17.

Jurco added two goals in the second before Little got Winnipeg on the board with his 16th of the season at 14:24. But Gustafsson responded for the Blackhawks, scoring on a nice rush to the net at 17:27.

NOTES: Quenneville said Delia was going to travel with the team to Colorado and should be fine for Friday night’s game against the Avalanche. With four games left in the season, he said Forsberg (lower body) is likely done for the year. Jean-Francois Berube was recalled from Rockford of the AHL on an emergency basis.

Davidson Hits 3 Of White Sox’s 6 Homers In 14-7 Rout Of KC

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Matt Davidson became the fourth player in major league history to homer three times on opening day, the White Sox went deep six times total, and Chicago routed the Kansas City Royals 14-7 on Thursday to spoil their 50th anniversary celebration.

Tim Anderson also homered twice and Jose Abreu went deep for the White Sox, who picked up James Shields (1-0) in a big way after the former Royals ace surrendered four runs in the first inning.

Shields wound up lasting six innings, holding Kansas City without a hit after that shaky first.

Of the four players with three-homer opening days, three have done it against the Royals, while the six homers by Chicago on opening day matched the big league record set by the Mets in 1988.

Yolmer Sanchez added a three-run single and Yoan Moncada drove in a pair of runs for the White Sox, who forced Royals manager Ned Yost to burn through nine pitchers.

Danny Duffy (0-1) breezed through three innings for Kansas City, but a trio of homers in a five-run fourth turned his day around. The left-hander survived the inning before hitting the clubhouse.

Despite a cold rain and steel-gray skies, the Royals looked early on as if they would reward the hardy fans who turned out to celebrate the start of their golden anniversary season.

Longtime third baseman Mike Moustakas, who signed a one-year deal during spring training, provided an RBI single in the first before new first baseman Lucas Duda hit a three-run homer to right.

Everything unraveled when the fourth inning began.

Abreu led off a homer binge with a two-run shot, Davidson followed with his first home run, and Anderson added his first two batters later. By the time Moncada added an RBI double off Duffy later in the fourth inning, Chicago had turned a four-run hole into a 5-4 advantage.

Davidson and Anderson went deep again in the fifth off Royals reliever Blaine Boyer, and Sanchez tacked on a bases-clearing single off Burch Smith with two outs in the seventh.

Davidson capped his big game with a three-run homer off Brian Flynn in the eighth, becoming the first White Sox player with a three-homer game since Dan Johnson in October 2012.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Royals: C Salvador Perez (left knee sprain), RHP Nate Karns (right elbow inflammation), INF Adalberto Mondesi (right shoulder impingement) and OF Bubba Starling (left oblique strain) were placed on the DL before the game. Perez is expected to miss 4-6 weeks, though Karns could be back soon.

White Sox: Hard-throwing LHP Carlos Rodon (left shoulder rehab) and C Kevan Smith (sprained left ankle) were placed on the DL retroactive to Monday.

MORE MOVES

The Royals also designated for assignment pitchers Wily Peralta and Ryan Zimmer, selected the contracts of INF Ryan Goins and RHP Blaine Boyer and recalled C Cam Gallagher from Triple-A Omaha. The White Sox selected the contract of LHP Hector Santiago.

UP NEXT

The teams are off Friday before resuming their series this weekend. The White Sox will send RHP Lucas Giolito the mound Saturday night while the Royals counter with RHP Ian Kennedy.

Rambling In Jayhawk Territory

CHICAGO (CBS) — CBS 2 is on the road to the Final Four.

On Wednesday CBS 2’s Charlie De Mar left Chicago as he makes his way across four states to San Antonio.

If Loyola wins on Saturday and if Kansas wins, that is the national championship game.

CBS 2 went Kansas’ campus to do a little scouting.

That’s Jayhawk territory.

“This is very tough because I am a die-hard Chicago fan and my heart is always with everything Chicago,” says Jordan Brandt who is from Chicago and went to Kansas University and works at the school.

“How about this. I’ll wear a Chicago hat and a KU shirt,” says Brandt.

“It’s going to be hard,” says Emily Gullickson, a Jayhawks fan who promises not to root against Sister Jean.

Sister Jean (as a cardboard cutout) even posed with a fan of Saturday’s opponent, Michigan.

Loyola’s unpredictable and winding road to the Final Four continues.

Ramblers Get Support From NBA Star

CHICAGO (CBS) — Now the latest on the road to the Final Four.

They Loyola Ramblers hold their first practice at the Alamodome.

CBS 2’s Ryan Baker is with the team in San Antonio where the Ramblers have been getting the royal treatment.

The enormity of being in the Final Four really registered for the Ramblers earlier today when they had a closed practice at the Alamodome.

The Loyola players are seeing their faces plastered everywhere they turn.

It was cool watching them admiring themselves on a wall outside of their locker room.

NBA superstar Russell Westbrook wanted to meet them last night.

“It was very cool to see that we’re in the same town as them. He knows who we are,” says Loyola center Cameron Krutwig.

“He was saying congrats to us. It’s cool that he knows who we are,” says Loyola guard Clayton Custer.

“As soon as I saw our whole parade and the car that we got and just everything for us, I felt like we worked hard for this moment,” says Loyola forward Aundre Jackson.

Westbrook wished the team good luck and told them to go ahead and win it.

Mayor Emanuel Gives Deposition In CPD Shooting Case

CHICAGO (CBS) — Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is in the hot seat.

A sitting mayor giving a court deposition.

It’s a rare scene but it’s happening now at the Daley Center.

CBS 2’s Dorothy Tucker has the story.

The mayor has been on the hot seat for nearly three hours.

He’s forced to explain what he knew about a controversial police shooting.

The mayor came up on a special elevator reserved for judges.

Emanuel is here to face intense questioning by the attorneys for the families of Quintonio LeGrier and Bettie Jones.

Both were shot by officer Robert Rialmo in December of 2015.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability, known as COPA, ruled the shooting unjustified.

It said it it found inconsistencies in Rialmo’s account that LeGreir was trying to attack him with a bat.

Earlier this week Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson issued this letter disagreeing with COPA, writing “when the actions of an assailant will likely cause death or serious physical injury, then the use of firearms and other deadly force options by officers is appropriate.”

“The superintendent’s letter is a travesty,” says Bill Foutris, the attorney for the Legrier family.

Before the deposition, said he plans to ask the mayor about COPA’s finding versus the superintendent’s letter.

“We’ll ask him which of the two he agrees with. I’m going to ask him about the code of silence,” says Foutris. “When he got in front of the city council and said the code of silence exists and then he files a stipulation in this case under oath that he doesn’t know anything about it. Did he lie to the people in the city council or is he lying in this case.”

A judge has ruled that the deposition will be sealed.
