CHICAGO (CBS) — Several suburban fire departments responded to an immense blaze early Tuesday in northwest suburban Barrington.
The fire started around 2 a.m. at a 6,000-square-foot home on Cuba Road between Old Barrington Road and Route 59. A total of 30 suburban fire departments were called to the scene, and more than 100 firefighters responded to the blaze.
Firefighters had to work from a defensive position, because it was too dangerous to enter the home.
The roof of the home collapsed, and crews had to truck in water to douse the flames, because there weren’t enough hydrants in the neighborhood.
Officials said the homeowners were on vacation in Australia at the time of the blaze, which started near the garage area.
The home was a total loss. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
