Panarin, Crawford Lead Blackhawks Past Blue Jackets 3-1

CHICAGO (AP) — Artemi Panarin had two goals, Corey Crawford made 32 saves and the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-1 on Friday night to reach the cusp of clinching the Central Division.

Panarin scored in the opening minute, then added an empty-netter with 44 seconds left for his 28th goal of the season. Marian Hossa also scored in the first period for Chicago, and Patrick Kane assisted on all three goals as Chicago extended its division lead to nine points over idle Minnesota.

The Wild have five games remaining and the Blackhawks have four.

Nick Foligno scored his 25th goal to end an eight-game drought and Sergei Bobrovksy made 21 saves, but the Blue Jackets lost for the second time in two nights.

Levine: It’s Showtime For The 2017 Chicago Cubs, A Mix Of Old And New

(CBS) — The World Series victory of last November is now history. If you want to relive the thrill of victory, walk over to the new office building next to the Wrigley Field and look for the championship trophy case.

The 2017 Chicago Cubs begin anew with many old faces that celebrated their first championship in 108 years on Nov. 2, 2016 in Cleveland, Ohio. But also some new ones.

Let’s take a good look at Manager Joe Maddon’s group for this season.

STARTING PITCHING

The Cubs return with four of their five outstanding rotation pitchers from last season.

Jon Lester is the ace. He had probably his best season ever in 2016. Picking up where he left off, a 19-5 season would be welcomed by one and all. Lester had the second lowest ERA in baseball (2.44). Lester is ready to move on from the era of now-retired catcher David Ross. The 33-year-old pitcher worked well with catcher Willson Contreras all spring training long.

Jake Arrieta is competing for his team, pride and a huge free-agent payday. The 31-year-old veteran won 18 games and has won more than any pitcher in baseball over the last two seasons (40). The pitcher wants to cut down on his bases on balls (76) that marred an otherwise awesome year.

John Lackey will assume the number-three slot in the rotation. The 38-year-old hurler had a much better 2016 than the numbers suggest. He led the National League in innings pitched before injuring his shoulder warming up for an aborted relief appearance. Lackey brings that soldier-of-fortune mentality to each outing.

Newcomer Brett Anderson should be a great addition when he takes the ball in Game No. 4. A ground ball pitching machine, the only question is whether he can he stay healthy. Anderson has a self-deprecating way about him. “I have been here six weeks and I don’t hate anyone yet,” he said last week in Arizona.

The major-league ERA leader, Kyle Hendricks, is your No. 5 starter. Yes, that is correct. Sixteen wins and an ERA title gets you the last post in the five-spoke pitching wheel. This positioning should change as the season progresses. Don’t expect the Cubs to skip their number-five man.

BULLPEN

Let us begin with Wade Davis, starting his Chicago Cub career as the new closer. Replacing Aroldis Chapman is no easy assignment. Don’t underestimate Davis, though. He has four quality pitches and left spring training throwing 95 mph-plus at times. He had some command issues that should be watched. He appears injury-free after two forearm injuries in 2016. Davis can be unhittable at his peak of performance. Maddon says he will not pitch him more than two or three games straight.

Among several setup men are Pedro Strop, Kenji Uehara, Hector Rondon, Carl Edwards, Justin Grimm and Mike Mongomery.

Maddon will have only seven bullpen guys to start the season. One lefty seems light. Uehara is a reverse-split guy. Left- handed hitters only bat .180 against the 42-year-old pitcher. Look for Edwards to be closing games at some later point of the season.

CATCHERS

There are 2 ½ receivers here. Contreras and Miguel Montero are 1 and 2. Left-fielder Kyle Schwarber is the third man when he sporadically starts or comes in after a double switch.

Contreras could be an All-Star in a short period of time. He has improved greatly in his catching metrics. Contreras has an arm is as good as any in the game. He is a scary hitter. He was driving the ball 420 feet in spring training the opposite way on pitches away.

People may be surprised to see a healthy Montero playing much better in 2017. He was able to work out without back trouble in the offseason. Schwarber will be prepared to catch when called upon.

INFIELD

The Cubs return with the All-Star infield from 2016. Anthony Rizzo, the longest-tenured Chicago Cub, is prepared for a monster season. The fun-loving first baseman looks to be in his best condition ever. This man is a workout machine. His numbers improved, due to more off days.

MVP third baseman Kris Bryant and Javier Baez will back up Rizzo. The two-headed monster of Baez and seasoned veteran Ben Zobrist will both play second base. Baez will move around the infield a lot. He is such a weapon at second that Maddon will want him in games late to protect leads. His offense is almost star-caliber now. Zobrist, with a little less playing time, will be even more effective. The man rarely swings at a bad pitch.

Shortstop Addison Russell could be the team’s next MVP candidate. Do not laugh. He is very capable of 30 long balls and 100-plus RBI. His defense is the best in the league. At 23, Russell is a budding superstar.

Bryant has warned he wants to be “better” this season – better than the 39 HR’s and 101 RBI and 121 runs scored in 2016. He told me he wants to hit the ball hard to the opposite field in 2017. Lost in the MVP talk was the fact Bryant was above-average at three different defensive positions. Where do we find more of this type of man?

OUTFIELD

Two new starting outfielders join gold glove right-fielder Jason Heyward. Schwarber returns after missing 158 regular season games. He has made great strides in his route-running this spring. He has a strong, accurate arm. That said, his release of the ball in different parts of the field needs work. He will learn to use leverage and fewer steps as the season progresses.

The center field spot will be a platoon, with vet Jon Jay and Albert Almora. Almora is one of the better pure outfielders in the system. He has surprising power. Maddon would love to see the former No. 1 pick win the job outright by October.

Jay is a capable defender at all three positions and a professional hitter. Heyward is the best right-fielder in the game on defense. His offense has a great chance to be better. He was driving balls hard to all fields this spring. Repeating his mechanics has been a problem for this affable and hard-working player. If he hits .275, the power numbers will improve dramatically. He should slug for a much higher number.

BENCH

Tommy La Stella, on certain days, will be Maddon’s only left-handed bat off of the bench (when right-handers start and Montero and Jay are in the lineup). Versatile outfielder Matt Szczur made the club. He proved to be a nice pinch-hitting weapon in the first half of 2016. Having either Baez or Zobrist on the bench makes the Cubs the deepest team in baseball.

There it is. Enjoy watching a World Series championship team try and repeat.

Business Beware: What To Know About Ransomware

Talk about alarming. According to the U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team, more than 4,000 ransomware attacks have occurred every day since this time last year. That statistic is extremely alarming given that experts report this figure to be three times higher than similar attacks encountered only the year before in 2015.

With those numbers in mind, it’s best to believe that your own data, no matter how mundane, is at risk. That also goes for computer users unaware of their access to unknowingly sensitive information hackers would go after.

Beware of ransomware

Ransomware is defined as a type of malicious software designed to block access to a computer system until a sum of money is paid. These attacks come to the forefront in a number of ways, as well as in a vast variety of cases. Some situations are so serious that the hacking turns into a crisis of grand, and even international proportions. Others turn out to be far less critical, but devastating because the person’s affected computer contained such items as personal photos and other memorabilia that may never be recovered.

When your machine is hit up by ransomware, and your files become encrypted, you can say goodbye to all your data. However, you are offered a chance to use a company that isn’t vetted, but claims to be able to help by way of a pop-up message, if and when you shell out a lot of money. In most cases, there is no way to know if you are being taken for a complete scam or not until the funds are surrendered to this unknown provider that promises to be of service.

Lessons learned

What is the lesson here? Don’t put yourself at the mercy of dubious technology support systems in the first place. Instead, do all you can to avoid being taken by ransomware. Always back up your work, and always use your own security software to keep your computer as clean and secure as possible.

You will find it is far better to take precautions rather than deal with the aftermath should these vicious attacks come calling. This is a situation in which the proverbial “better safe than sorry” adage is most definitely spot on.

Attempted Child-Luring Reported In Belmont Cragin

(STMW) — Police issued a community alert Friday for a man who twice attempted to lure a girl in the Belmont-Cragin neighborhood on the West Side.

The latest attempt happened March 31 about 7:50 a.m. when the man followed a 14-year-old girl walking to school in the 5000 block of West Palmer Avenue, according to Chicago Police.

The girl threatened to call police after the man attempted to talk to her, at which point he stopped and walked north on Leclaire Avenue, police said.

About three weeks earlier, sometime between March 8 and March 10, the man was seen in the 2400 block of North Laramie Avenue both in a car and on foot. The girl ignored the man and continued walking when he attempted to talk to her and invited her into the car, police said.

The man is described as a 40 to 45-year-old white Hispanic, 5-foot-7 with a heavy build and dark hair. He only spoke Spanish to the girl, police said.

Chance The Rapper: Chicago Bulls To Donate $1 Million For CPS

CHICAGO (CBS) — From Grammy winner to hometown hero for students, Chance the Rapper made a major investment in Chicago’s future.

CBS 2’s Vince Gerasole was present at Robeson High School in Englewood on Friday when the Rapper announced that he’s secured an additional $1 million for creative programs for Chicago Public Schools.

This donation comes from the Chicago Bulls.

“It is my job,” Chance said. “Just as who I am, to bring light and attention to public school funding.”

The Chicago Bulls reportedly were convinced of the difference it could make when Chance personally called Michael Reinsdorf, President and COO of the team.

“We just thought it was a great opportunity to work with an incredible person,” Reinsdorf said.

This is part of Chance’s CPS fundraising effort, and comes after the musician donated $1 million of his own money earlier this month. During that initial press conference at Westcott Elementary School, he said ten CPS will receive $10,000 checks as part of the $1 million donation, starting with Weston Elementary, which is near his childhood home.

“We all know that Illinois’ education system is one of the most underfunded in the nation, which has forced Chicago Public Schools to make drastic cuts,” he said.

The effort is called The New Chance Arts and Literature Fund. The Ingenuity arts organization will help determine how to distribute the funds to schools and students.

A budget stalemate in Springfield has CPS operating at a deficit. Chance unsuccessfully lobbied Gov. Bruce Rauner to reach a compromise.

“I’m frustrated and disappointed in the Governor’s inaction,” Chance said after his meeting with Rauner. “That will not stop me from continuing to do all I can to support Chicago’s most valuable resource — its children.”

So for now, he’s focusing his attention on raising funds himself.

“I like to make my contribution, and I hope the other sides will get the job done,” Chance said.

He said the new funds will be available by next fall.

After The Bell: Stocks Close Lower, But Post Solid Quarter

CHICAGO (CBS) — Stocks closed lower Friday, finishing the last trading day of the week, month and first quarter on a bit of a soft note, as investors sifted through a hefty batch of economic data.

The NASDAQ dropped 2, the S&P 500 shed 5 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down nearly 65 points, settling to 20,663.

“We are in the midst of a secondary correction within an ongoing bull market. Secondary corrections always have reasons for why the market pulls back, but at the end of the day, market moves get a bit tired and in order to restore that vitality you need stocks to pull back,” said Chuck Carlson, CEO of Horizon Investment Services

He also noted that there is an improvement in corporate profits and that ultimately is what drives stocks in a sustained way.

2 Prospect Heights Men Are Being Held On Bond For Sexual Abuse Charges

CHICAGO (CBS) – Two northwest suburban men are behind bars accused of sexually abusing teenage boys.

As CBS 2’s Mai Martinez reports, police have identified three victims, but fear there could be more.

“It is very disturbing,” said Chief Al Steffen, Prospect Heights Police Department.

Chief Steffen is talking about the details of sexual abuse that investigators say several boys ages 14 to 16 suffered at the hands of Christopher and Anthony Wheeler inside their Prospect Heights home on Quaker Lane.

“It was mostly on the weekends and there’s activities that were used to invite the victims over. One was a birthday party. One was a sleep over,” Chief Steffen said. “The parents of the victims, they’re horrified, and they feel like they’ve been taken advantage of.”

Investigators said the married couple found victims among friends of their adopted son and a foster son.

“We feel that they’re using the two boys as a lure to bring in other kids that they used as sexual objects,” Chief Steffen said.

Prospect Heights Police learned of the alleged abuse after a 15-year-old Chicago boy went to a hospital and told staff he was sexually abused by the two men.

“The fathers actually showed him pornography and offered alcohol and he ended up engaging in sexual activity,” Chief Steffen said.

While investigating the case, police found two more victims–ages 14 and 15.

“Right now, we know for certain that there are three [victims] and there’s potential of at least two to three more,” Chief Steffen said. “We’re still looking through texts and emails and trying to build a case.”

In the meantime, Chief Steffen is encouraging any other victims to come forward.

The men are being help on $3- and $4-million bonds.

DCFS said the couple passes a background check in September 2016, but the agency is in the process of revoking their foster parent license, pending the outcome of this investigation.

Police said bother of the couple’s children are safe.

East Chicago Resident: Lead-Tainted Home Safer Than Moving To Violent Chicago

(CBS) – Friday was the deadline to get out for East Chicago, Ind. residents living in a lead-contaminated housing complex.

As CBS 2’s Dorothy Tucker discovered, some are packing up, but others are refusing to leave.

For 13 years, Akeeshia Daniels has been living in the West Calumet public housing complex.

She started packing to leave because of lead-contaminated soil throughout the development. But she’s still there. Some landlords wont’ accept housing vouchers, some want too much money. And some places Daniels refuses to go – like Chicago’s Altgeld Gardens complex.

“Everything you see about Chicago is shooting. Even yesterday, I watched seven people were killed in one day,” Daniels says. “I’m so afraid to move my kids to Chicago.”

Daniels is one of 58 families left in the West Calumet complex, where many of the units are boarded or empty. Nearly 300 families have moved out.

Some are about to leave.

“It’s a lot better than staying out here and worrying about the lead levels and my children being affected,” Lutricia Clay says.

That’s the argument East Chicago officials are making. They declined to speak on camera, but say they want children out before the weather warms up and the lead-contaminated dust begins to fly.

Families refusing to leave have until Monday to file an appeal with the city’s housing department. The hearings are scheduled for Tuesday. Anyone still in the complex by Friday can expect to get an eviction notice.

April Is Overflow Action Month: Consumers Urged To Conserve Water

CHICAGO (CBS) — For the next 30 days, Friends of the Chicago River want consumers to take the Overflow Action Pledge.

“We are asking you to help keep the Chicago River Clean. We’ve organized 30 days of action and awareness and the goal is to protect clean, fresh water which is one of the most valuable things we can do,” said Margaret Frisbie, Executive Director Friends of the Chicago River.

The campaign will engage people in water conservation activities to help the Chicago River, ranging from sharing “how-to” tips for water conservation at home to taking the Overflow Action Pledge. WBBM’s Lisa Fielding reports.

“Based on the concept of Ozone Action Days, the Overflow Action Days alert people that before, during and after rainstorms, we should reduce the amount of water that goes downs our sewers and pipes,” Frisbie said.

Frisbie is encouraging everyone to sign up for these alerts to remind you of the kinds of things you can do to protect the river like shortening your showers and flushing less.

“We all do our part as individuals. We all have a responsibility when it comes to overflow,” said Senator Dick Durbin. “If we do our part in this generation the next generation will be talking about how we turned history around.”

Sen. Dick Durbin spoke about the responsibility each person has when it comes to overflow. (WBBM/Lisa Fielding)

Frisbie said just a third-of-an-inch of rain can cause a combined sewer overflow to the river which is harmful to people and wildlife.

“We know that climate change has changed our rainfall patterns and it rains harder and more isolated ways and that can cause local overflow and so we can help offset it.”

Despite the massive improvements to water quality due to the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan, wastewater disinfection and the increasing use of green infrastructure, the Chicago River is still subject to combined sewer overflows and storm water runoff.

“As federal policy goes in the wrong direction, we have to resist and respond with action at the local level. I’m working to secure federal funding for local projects. Everyone of these efforts, we rely on local partners for local action. Ordinary people can effect our policies in Washington,” said Jan Schakowsky, (D) 9th District.

“If 50,000 people saved 20 gallons a day, that would be a million gallons a day. If ten times that amount of people, imagine how much water that is. Every drop counts. Take part in Overflow Action Days,” Frisbie said.

“On a local level, hashtag overflow action days. Remember just flush with number two,” laughed Mariyana Spyropoulos, Board President, Metropolitan Water Reclamation District.

Chicago Congressman’s Son, 47, Dies

CHICAGO (CBS) –There’s been another death in the family of Congressman Danny Davis.

In November, Davis’s grandson was shot and killed, and now the boy’s father has died. WBBM’s Steve Miller reports.

Congressman Danny Davis said his 47-year-old son Stacey Wilson died at his Bronzeville home.

Davis said his son was diabetic, who was in and out of hospitals for the past three weeks.

“I don’t think he knew it was as severe as it was,” Davis said. “And I don’t think I knew either. We were just talking about it. He had kidney problems and high blood pressure. And had been having difficulty keeping his blood pressure down.”

Congressman Davis said his son never got over the loss of his 15-year-old son – Javon Wilson – who was shot and killed last fall. Police say the shooting was related to an argument over gym shoes.

“He had been grieving for Javon ever since it happened,” Davis said.

Davis said his son worked for the Cook County Circuit Court Clerk’s office.

CBS 2 Presses White House About Sanctuary Cities Via Skype

CHICAGO (CBS) — It’s a first for Chicago television reporters — asking Sean Spicer a question via Skype.

Here’s more of CBS 2’s Derrick Blakley’s direct, and contentious, exchange with the White House Press Secretary:

“I have a question and, if at all possible, a follow-up as well,” Blakley began. “Chicago receives about $12 million a year in law enforcement assistance from the federal government. Would President Trump cut off those funds due to Chicago’s sanctuary city status, even though it would greatly hamper Chicago police in their fight against Chicago street violence — something the President has repeatedly said troubles him deeply?”

“I think it would be interesting to want to send more money to a city that is allowing people to come into the country, who are breaking the law, who, in many cases, are committing crimes, members of gangs,” Spicer said.

“You can’t be a sanctuary city and, at the same time, seem to pretend or express concern about law reinforcement or ask for more money when probably a number of the funds you’re using in the first place are going to law enforcement to handle the situation that you’ve created for yourself.”

Spicer continued, “I think the President’s belief on sanctuary cities is one shared by upwards of 80 percent of the American people. We shouldn’t be using American tax dollars to fund cities and counties and, in some cases, potentially states that are seeking to allow people who are not legally in this country, who potentially can do us harm to get funding. I think there’s no question — it’s not a question of what he will do. His intentions have been very clear from the beginning. I think it’s vastly supported by the vast majority of the American people. But I think to suggest that somehow they’re not inextricably linked is a failure to fully appreciate the scenario.”

“Does that mean the President is more concerned with deporting illegal immigrants than he is with putting shooters and killers in jail?” Blakley questioned.

“Respectfully, I think you’re de-linking the two issues,” Spicer said. “If you have people who are in this country illegally, that are part of a gang, that are a threat to public safety, or committing a crime, then funding that activity and allowing that to fester is in itself a problem.”

In those comments, the White House directly links illegal immigration and crime — something President Trump did repeatedly throughout the campaign.

Trump told crowds that thousands of Americans have been killed by illegal immigrants. However, research shows illegal immigrants are less likely than native-born Americans to be involved in crime.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel is sticking by Chicago’s Sanctuary status, insisting the city is on firm legal ground, and implying its willing to go to court to keep those federal funds.

UIC Swimmer Accused Of Recording Video In Women’s Locker Room

(STMW) — A 19-year-old University of Illinois at Chicago student on the men’s swim team faces criminal charges for allegedly taking video of women swimmers undressing in their locker room, the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting.

As they undressed to put on their swimsuits before practice on Feb. 2, a pair of swimmers on the UIC women’s team heard laughter from beyond the wall their locker room shares with the men’s team, Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Joseph Carlson said Friday at a bond hearing.

One of the women looked up at a gap between the locker room ceiling and the wall “expecting the men to throw something over the wall,” Carlson said.

Instead, she spotted freshman swimmer Joseph Dalesandro’s iPhone, which had been pointed at the women’s locker room, Carlson said. The 20-year-old woman climbed up the lockers and snatched the phone, noting that it had been recording for 45 minutes.

She stopped the recording, but was unable to access the video. She then handed the phone over to university police, Carlson said.

Wearing a blue UIC windbreaker over sweatpants, Dalesandro bowed his head as he stood before Judge Laura Sullivan on Friday afternoon at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse.

Dalesandro, a graduate of Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville, was ordered held on $50,000 bond, and was barred from entering the locker rooms at the UIC or having any contact with the victims.

Dalesandro’s attorney, Marc Davidson, noted that Dalesandro hadn’t shared the video with anyone.

“This was, I believe, a prank,” Davidson said. “It may be at tasteless one, but it was a prank that went nowhere.”

Dalesandro, Carlson said, was taken into custody by UIC Police on Thursday and unlocked his phone for investigators. He also signed a statement admitting that he had twice climbed the lockers of the men’s locker room and propped his camera in a gap between the wall and ceiling, Carlson said

Around 11 a.m. that day, Dalesandro admitted he pointed the camera into the locker room and recorded about three minutes of footage, showing the two other women’s swimmers changing out of their street clothes and into their swimsuits, Carlson said. After retrieving the camera, Dalesandro edited the video down to about 60 seconds, just showing the two women undressing, Carlson said.

Two hours later, Dalesandro climbed the lockers again and planted his phone, leaving it to record for 45 minutes until the second pair of swimmers noticed the camera.

UIC officials provided police with a list of people who had access to the locker room during the time period, and Dalesandro was one of five men who were in the building, Carlson said.

A spokesman for the UIC athletic department declined to comment on disciplinary action by the university against Dalesandro, citing privacy laws. “The athletic department has been aware there has been an investigation and is fully cooperating with the university police and will continue to do so,” spokesman Dan Yopchick said Friday.

Dalesandro is “close” with his older sister, Gia Dalesandro, herself a standout swimmer who also starred at Neuqua Valley swim team and then at Indiana University, Davidson said.

Joseph Dalesandro coaches swimming and water polo, and is involved in the Special Olympics, Davidson said.

CHICAGO (CBS) — Mayor Rahm Emanuel said the people who committed the deadly South Shore shootings do not deserve to be on Chicago’s streets – they belong behind bars.

Seven people were killed in three separate shootings less than 12 hours apart on Thursday in the neighborhood.

“There is a level of evil and depravity about an individual that would shoot a pregnant woman,” Emanuel said when speaking to reporters in the West Loop. “There is a level of evil and depravity about an individual that would walk into a restaurant and, in front of a mother, shoot her sons.”

The Mayor said there may be some people whose lives could be bettered by opportunities and jobs, but said the killers thought they were doing their jobs.

“They do not belong in our society, they do not belong in our city, and they do not belong on the streets and in the communities and neighborhoods in the city of Chicago.”

Devon Still’s Daughter Triumphs Over Cancer

Devon Still shares a unique bond with his daughter Leah, a closeness that they both cherish. When Leah was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma in 2014, at just four years old, she was given a 50/50 chance of survival.

“It’s like you’re being hit by a train,” Still said, explaining how he felt when he received the news. “Your whole world is turned around.”

Emotionally distraught, his performance on the field began to suffer. Struggling at team practices with the Cincinnati Bengals, the team on which he played at the time, Devon considered leaving football behind.

“It was that one point in time in my life that I didn’t know if I was going to be called Dad again by her,” Still shared.

The Bengals moved Still to the practice squad, which gave the star athlete the chance to spend more time with Leah. After Sunday games, he would fly back to Philadelphia to be with his daughter. When Still walked through the door, Leah would light up with renewed energy, knowing her father was there.

There were a lot of ups and down on Leah’s cancer journey. On days when Leah was having a more difficult time, Devon and his family would go to Walgreens for necessities to make Leah feel more comfortable. “They really helped us never feel alone.”

When Devon went public with the news of Leah’s illness, the support he received from the NFL, his fans, his family and his Walgreens family played a vital role in Leah’s battle. “The days that we were really having a hard time with what Leah was going through, we leaned on them and they really helped us never feel alone.”

What advice does Still have for families fighting the disease? “Always remain strong. What you want to do is try to find a victory in every single day,” he says. “The mountain may look so big, but if you look at the small victories you continue to chop away at that mountain every day. It gets easier.”

On March 25, 2015, Devon Still announced, via Instagram, that Leah was in remission.

“Now, every day, I wake up and I just feel blessed.”

At Issue: Democratic Governor Candidate Daniel Biss Talks Rauner’s Failure

CHICAGO (CBS) — Democratic candidate for governor Daniel Biss said Bruce Rauner may already be running re-election campaign commercials, but his record as Illinois Governor is clearly one of failure.

State Senator Daniel Biss is quick to label Governor Bruce Rauner’s time in office as a failure, but he said there is enough blame to go around for the budget crisis. While The Governor’s running commercials saying he can fix things, Evanston Democrat Biss knows many residents doubt that any politicians are really working for them. WBBM’s Political Editor Craig Dellimore reports from the Loop.

“The people of Illinois have really low expectations of their politicians in Springfield and they have low expectations because they have had poor outcome for decades and decades,” Biss said. “We have to be willing to stand up and expect more, unless we are willing to demand more, we are not going to get more. This campaign is about saying – listen it’s been hard, yes we are hurting, but now is the time to demand a government that actually works for ordinary people.”

Senator Biss said that with the state still without a budget, there is no way Governor Rauner can bill himself as someone who can fix Illinois. It’s worse off than when he took over, Biss said.

Biss said the state needs to get more in taxes from millionaires and billionaires like Rauner. But he would not get specific about where budget cuts should be made.

“There are conversations to happen across state government, and I think making the kind of cuts that have been made to core services, whether its early childhood, higher education – which has resulted in raising tuition, is the opposite of what we have to do, that is the opposite of investing in people,” Biss said.

Democratic hopeful Senator Daniel Biss is the guest on our “At Issue” program this weekend and you can hear more of his comments Sunday at 9:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m.

Spicer: “No Question” Trump Would Pull Funds Over Sanctuary Status

CHICAGO (CBS) — White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Friday that Chicago can’t expect to continue receiving funding from the Justice Department to fight crime if it maintains its status as a so-called “sanctuary city” that shields some undocumented immigrants from deportation attempts.

Attorney General Jeff Session has vowed to block sanctuary cities from receiving Justice Department grants and to “claw back” existing funds, if they do not begin helping the federal government enforce immigration laws.

CBS 2’s Derrick Blakley, via Skype, asked Spicer if President Donald Trump would cut off the approximately $12 million a year Chicago receives from the federal government for law enforcement due to its sanctuary city status.

“I think there’s no question. It’s not a question of what he will do. His intention’s been very clear from the beginning, and I think it’s vastly supported by a vast majority of the American people,” Spicer said.

In 2012, the Chicago City Council approved an ordinance to protect undocumented immigrants from being held for immigration authorities, unless they have been convicted of a serious crime or are being sought on a criminal warrant. The ordinance also prohibits Chicago police from allowing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents from using city facilities for interviews or investigations, and bars officers from replying to ICE inquiries or speaking to ICE officials about someone’s custody status or release date.

Spicer said the president does not believe federal tax dollars should be used to fund cities, counties, or states that take steps to protect undocumented immigrants from federal law enforcement.

“You can’t be a sanctuary city and at the same time seem to pretend or express concern about law enforcement, or ask for more money, when probably a number of funds that you’re using in the first place are going to law enforcement to handle the situation that you’ve created for yourself,” Spicer said.

Spicer said illegal immigration and law enforcement are “inextricably linked,” and not fully enforcing federal immigration laws allows crime problems to continue.

“If you have people who are in this country illegally that are part of a gang, that are … a threat to public safety, or committing a crime, then funding that activity and allowing that to fester is in and of itself a problem,” he said.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel repeatedly has said the city will remain a sanctuary city, despite the Trump administration’s threats to cut off federal law enforcement funding, arguing the government cannot use the threat of cutting off major funding to coerce states into adopting federal policies, or order local governments to enforce federal law.

“The administration’s plan to deny federal funds to cities that are standing up for their values is unconstitutional, and Chicago is proud to stand with 34 cities and counties across the country in asking a federal court to prevent the federal government from illegally withholding federal funds,” Emanuel spokesman Matt McGrath said in an email earlier this week.

Keidel: A Last Look At The Final Four

By Jason Keidel

The Final Four is upon us. And there’s a nice, eclectic mix of teams pining for the title. Let’s tackle each team based on when they play.

South Carolina vs. Gonzaga
Saturday, April 1, 6:09 p.m. ET

South Carolina:

The Gamecocks can fit at least its toes inside the slipper as a No. 7 seed from a football school. If it felt like the Gamecocks were really good at every sport but basketball, that’s because it’s true. South Carolina had zero tournament wins between 1939 and 1972, then none between 1974 and 2016, two droughts that would make California blush.

And even this year, the signs were hardly there for a biblical run to Phoenix. South Carolina scored just 1.00 points per possession in SEC play, which ranks 11th in the conference (according to Yahoo!). Not to mention it ended the regular season with a brutal loss in the SEC Tournament, scoring a woeful 53 points against Alabama.

While the Gamecocks don’t have the best players or pedigree, they have the hottest player left, in Sindarius Thornwell, who’s averaging 25.8 points and 7.5 rebounds during his uncanny ride to the Final Four. Topping off this glorious week, Thornwell was also just named first-team All-American. Thornwell is just one of three players since 1985 to score 100 tournament points while leading a 7-seed or lower to the Final Four, joining Danny Manning and Billy Donovan.

Maybe the Gamecocks were long-shots to get here, especially when you consider they were 2-5 to end the regular season. But they are 23-7 when Mr. Thornwell is on the hardwood.

Gonzaga:

Hard to be a sleeper or Cinderella when you’re 36-1, even if you play in those dreaded “mid-major” conferences. Even if the last team the West Coast Conference sent to the Final Four is unknown to most college hoops fans. Even if that team is the 1958 San Francisco Dons, led by Bill Russell.

Still, the Bulldogs are looking for respect, and may finally find some in their first Final Four after 20 trips to March Madness. And if you don’t see them as a threat to bag their first title, you haven’t been watching. Not since the 2000 Duke behemoth has a team entered the Final Four with Gonzaga’s scoring margin of at least 22 points per game.

And considering the dearth of decent centers, swingmen trying to fill the paint, it’s refreshing to see a true big man in Polish import Przemek Karnowski. The 7-foot-1 center has been vital in making Gonzaga the only team ranked in the top-five in offensive and defensive efficiency.

Gonzaga is a hardwood band of gypsies, a gaggle of college transfers, like guard Nigel Williams-Goss (Washington), guard Jordan Mathews (California) and forward Johnathan Williams (Missouri). Williams was named the region’s most outstanding player.

They’re all led by Mark Few, who’s not only getting his unofficial recognition as a top-tier coach, but also just won AP Coach of the Year. No doubt Few is equally tired of any narrative that includes a Cinderalla or bridesmaid. Maybe they don’t have the players or pedigree of a team like North Carolina. But with two more wins they can add a similar sobriquet to their school — champions.

Oregon vs. North Carolina
Saturday, April 1, 8:49 p.m. ET

Oregon:

The football program that’s doubled-down on basketball. Dana Altman has the Ducks on the quick curve since taking over in 2010. Part of Oregon’s charm is that the last time they went to a Final Four, there were only eight teams in the entire tournament.

Indeed, 1939 was perhaps the best year in the history of American cinema — with classics like The Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind, and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington raking in an Oscar or two. It was also the first, official NCAA men’s basketball tournament. And not only did the Ducks go, they won it all. Not only did the Ducks win it all, they weren’t even the Ducks back then, but rather the Webfoots.

Oregon is a No.3 seed, so it’s hardly mind-bending to see them here. But the way they handled Kansas was stunning, particularly considering the Jayhawks were not only the top seed, but also playing a de facto home game, in Kansas City, just 45 minutes from their campus.

The Ducks are quacking on all cylinders (sorry!), with the inside presence of Jordan Bell and the scalding shooting of Tyler Dorsey. Bell is leading the tournament with 12.5 rebounds per game, and is the only player with three double-doubles. Dorsey averaged a pedestrian 12.4 PPG in the regular season, but some symbolic switch flipped since the start of the Pac-12 tournament, with the Oregon guard virtually doubling his production (23.6 PPG), including 57.8 from three-point range.

>>MORE: Rising Star: Oregon Guard Tyler Dorsey

North Carolina:

North Carolina is the official juggernaut of the Final Four. Seeing the Tar Heels here is about as surprising as seeing the Patriots in the AFC title game. Not only is North Carolina loaded, as always, but they were also here 12 months ago, and were a miracle Villanova 3-pointer away from entering this weekend as defending champs.

Most pundits will tell you that North Carolina is not only the best team left, but was likely the team with the highest ceiling entering March Madness. And they can beat you with their best, like AP All-American (and ACC Player of the Year) guard Justin Jackson, who became the first Tar Heel to hit 100 three-pointers in a season, or a clutch three from walk-on Luke Maye, whose game-winner against Kentucky in the Elite 8 is the stuff of tournament lore. If team leader Joel Berry II can fight off his ankle injuries, then UNC will be even harder to knock off.

They are (fittingly) coached by the most decorated coach in the Final Four, by far, Roy Williams. Williams is now in his ninth Final Four, and is 80 clutch minutes from bagging his third national title. That would nudge him into a high historical orbit, joining just Jim Calhoun, Bob Knight, Adolph Rupp, Mike Krzyzewski, and John Wooden as the only men in history with at least three.

North Carolina has played in 160 NCAA Tournament games. South Carolina, on the other side of this bracket, had played in two before this year. Two. To call Carolina chalk is the Captain Obvious moment of the week.

Bullet-Proof Vests Suggested For Children On South, West Sides

CHICAGO (CBS) — After a violent day in the South Shore neighborhood, a longtime resident questions where the outrage from black activists is.

“I see them coming out always downtown protesting against the police. But never do I see them inside the black community,” he said.

Activist Tio Hardiman of Violence Interrupters visited the South Shore neighborhood after seven people were killed in three separate shootings less than 12 hours apart on Thursday.

Hardiman said he wasn’t joking when he suggested that “young people in the South and West Sides of Chicago be equipped with helmets and bullet-proof vests.”

Doc. Matt Harrington, CEO of Ammo Coding Systems, was with Hardiman. He’s behind legislation that would require ammunition manufacturers to make bullets traceable.

“Bullets just don’t come from a bullet fairy.”

Chicago’s 9-1-1 operators are supporting this legislation.

There has been a heavy police presence in this neighborhood.

Bears Waive DL Ego Ferguson

By Chris Emma–

(CBS) Ryan Pace has parted ways with another Phil Emery draft pick, waiving defensive lineman Ego Ferguson on Friday.

Ferguson, a second-round pick in 2014, played in just 20 games during his three years with the Bears, posting 36 tackles and two sacks. He missed the entire 2016 season due to a shoulder injury and played in just four games in 2015 after suffering a knee injury.

Since taking over as general manager in 2015, Pace has moved on from three members of the Bears’ 2014 draft class, including fourth-round pick Brock Vereen and sixth-round pick David Fales.

The Bears have added to their defensive line this offseason by signing John Jenkins, Kapron Lewis-Moore and re-signing C.J. Wilson.

Emma: Why The Cubs Could Be Even Better In 2017

By Chris Emma–

(CBS) Upon arrival to fanfare in Chicago in October 2011, Theo Epstein brought forth a five-year plan for the Cubs to sustain success.

His bold, brilliant foresight culminated last November with the Cubs’ first World Series championship in 108 years. The title came in the fifth year of that plan, but even Epstein couldn’t imagine how it would all play out.

The journey included an unforeseen clause in manager Joe Maddon’s contract with the Rays that allowed him to jump ship to the Cubs, a struggling pitcher named Jake Arrieta turn into a Cy Young winner, the acquisition of a rising star in Addison Russell in a blockbuster 2014 trade and hitting so far on every first-round pick in the Epstein era.

Epstein’s goal was to bring the Cubs sustained success in five years. They were in the National League Championship Series by the fourth season and champions in the fifth. What’s remarkable about this roster is how it’s still so young, with much development still to come.

Because of that, the Cubs should be even better than their 103 wins of last season. Let’s take a look at why.

1.) From best to better for Bryant?

After a run to NL Rookie of the Year honors in 2015, Kris Bryant worked tirelessly to drop his 30.6 percent strikeout rate. His drive paid dividends, with Bryant raising his average to .292 and dropping the strikeout rate 22.0 en route to an MVP campaign.

Bryant smashed 39 home runs in his second season, a number that surpassed his Cubs rookie record of 26 in 2015. While he has prodigious power, Bryant aims for an all-around plate approach, which is how he believes he can get better.

Ever the swing perfectionist, Bryant went to work after Game 7 of the World Series. In an offseason filled with media tours and his wedding, Bryant focused on being a better hitter by going to the opposite field. He had struggled on taking pitches the other way and wasn’t nearly as effective on outside pitches.

Even in an MVP season, Bryant grew wary of pitchers’ working him away. He believes that’s the next step in his development.

2.) ‘Find pitching’

Written in large letters across the baseball operations conference room is an important message from Epstein to his brass: Find pitching.

Epstein knows there’s never enough for a healthy organization, which should have quality depth in the bullpen and ample options for a rotation. During the Cubs’ run to the World Series, they encountered luck with their pitching health. Only John Lackey missed starts with a minor injury, and the bullpen was healthy for the most part.

The Cubs didn’t have the luxury of Mike Montgomery until last July. They started Adam Warren, Trevor Cahill, Rob Zastryzny, Jake Buchanan and even Brian Matusz in an effort to save their arms. If an injury had occurred for a Jon Lester or Kyle Hendricks, the Cubs would’ve been in trouble.

Naturally, Epstein made pitching depth a priority this offseason with that worst-case scenario in mind. Brett Anderson will be the fifth starter, and Montgomery will get starts too while waiting in reserve.Eddie Butler and Alec Mills are reclamation projects who could also get a chance this season.

Veteran relievers Koji Uehara and Brian Duensing add depth to a bullpen that now ends with Wade Davis — who posted a 1.87 ERA last season — instead of Aroldis Chapman. In the rotation and the bullpen, the Cubs are in a better situation with their pitching depth.

3.) The rise of Russell

Maddon often would discuss the promise of his young shortstop by first looking to Russell’s future. Wait until he’s 25, Maddon would say. It’s hard to believe Russell just turned 23 and is coming off an All-Star campaign last season. Power became a big part of his game with 21 homers, though it’s still raw.

Russell is already one of the top defensive shortstops in the NL and will be fighting with the Giants’ Brandon Crawford annually for Gold Glove honors at their position. He made strides at the plate in 2016 and is expected to improve again this year.

4.) Free Willy

With David Ross retired and dancing with the stars and Miguel Montero assuming a backup role, second-year pro Willson Contreras will be the Cubs’ primary catcher. And he should represent marked offensive improvement in the spot.

The 24-year-old Contreras posted a slash line of .282/.357/.488 in 2016, an impressive run for a rookie being shuffled between the busy role of catcher and trying a new position in left field. Contreras thrived at the plate and also was worth 4.5 defensive win shares, a testament to his efforts.

Contreras can focus primarily on his catching duties this season while working to replicate his season at the plate. He only had 283 plate appearances in 2016, many of which came during outings in left field. His bat proved to be too valuable for Maddon to keep out of the lineup. He was finding places for Contreras to succeed.

Now, Contreras will be a regular.

5.) ‘You go, we go’ 2.0

When Dexter Fowler returns to Chicago later this spring, he’ll do so as a St. Louis Cardinal while being greeted by an overwhelming reception from Cubs fans. Fowler will always be known as the man who led off Game 7 with a home run, a historic moment for the organization.

Fowler had a career year in 2016, posting a career-best 4.7 WAR in just 125 games as he was limited due to an injury that kept him out for several weeks. It wasn’t a coincidence the Cubs endured their worst struggles of the season without Fowler.

Now, they’ve aimed to replace him with quite the player — Kyle Schwarber, a unique lead-off to say the least. Maddon is confident in his career .353 on-base percentage and the potential to hit 30 or 40 home runs. During a spring training game last week, Schwarber led off the game with a bunt single then crushed a homer in his second appearance.

The 24-year-old Schwarber will handle the primary duties as the lead-off man, with Maddon targeting 140 games for him after he has played in just 71 during the regular season. With Schwarber setting the table, the Cubs will have great power and be dangerous from the first pitch of the game.

The Cubs are set for the long haul of the regular season, the deepest team in the game, and they stand poised to top the 103 wins of 2016. Their absurd plus-270 run differential of a year ago could be topped yet again by a team with greater offensive prowess than last season. On top of that, the pitching and defense remains largely the same — very good.

Playoff baseball is a journey of its own, a month of tension Chicago’s north side now knows well. Anything can happen, but these Cubs are just as equipped to win the World Series again.

After all, Epstein laid out a plan for more than one championship.

Wabash Avenue Reopens In Loop As New CTA Station Progresses

CHICAGO (CBS) — A section of Wabash Avenue in the Loop reopened Friday morning after being closed for months to allow for construction of a new CTA station.

The Chicago Department of Transportation announced Friday that Wabash has reopened between Washington and Madison, a move the department calls a “milestone” in the construction of a new Washington-Wabash elevated CTA station.

The closure between Madison and Washington started in November 2016, following a 10-week closure of Wabash between Madison and Monroe.

The new station will replace the Randolph/Wabash and Madison/Wabash stations, which date back to 1896, according to a statement from Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office. The new station will open in early summer and serve Brown, Green, Orange, Pink and Purple line commuters.

“The re-opening of Wabash represents real progress in our push to give the east side of the Loop a beautiful, modern, 21st Century elevated station that we can all be proud of,” Emanuel said.

“We thank all the merchants along Jewelers’ Row who have been open for business and bearing with us during this construction process” he said. “We are just a few months away from opening up the new station that will create a fully accessible gateway to the Loop and all the attractions in Millennium Park.”

Downer’s Grove Filmmaker Debuts New Independent Movie

CHICAGO (CBS) — Writer-director-actor Matthew Aaron said he tries to make a film a year and is constantly writing.

“This idea was one I felt very passionate about getting done now,” Aaron said. “My films tend to dovetail into my personal life and what I am experiencing.”

In his new independent film “Landline,” he plays a public relations executive who gives up his cellphone after he loses a promotion to a more social media savvy college graduate. Aaron said “Landline” takes a closer look at disconnecting from technology. WBBM’s Lisa Fielding reports.

“Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram they were taking over my life, Twitter,” he said. “I’m also a huge film buff and we were talking about Albert Brooks’ “Lost in America,” one day and the concept of the guy that goes mad. Then I thought about how mad would you go if you didn’t have your phone? How mad would you go if people were getting promotions over you because they knew more about social media than you did? That’s a real thing,” he said.

“Landline” also stars Jim O’Heir.

“Coming from the acting standpoint. If it’s down to two actors and they are both equally capable, the producers will look at their social media and if one has half a million followers and one has 10,000 followers, it’s a no brainer where they’re going to go,” said O’Heir. “I’ve had to become Twitter and Facebook savvy because of my career.”

The film takes place in Chicago and features some of the city’s iconic spots.

“I buy the phone at Yesterday. I do all the locations for my films. I pride myself on my locations. Places like Yesterday, The Loft, Ann Sather’s. It’s places I go to. Whenever I go anywhere, if I feel it’s a location for a movie, it’s gonna be. If you’re going to buy a Landline film, where else are you going to buy it? At Yesterday on Addison,” Aaron said.

The end of the film features a scene at Wrigley Field for a day with Ryne Sandberg playing himself.

“I stalked Ryne Sandberg. It was crazy how I found him. I stalked him down at a men’s hair convention. I said have you heard about our movie we’re doing? It’s me, Tom Arnold, Jim O”Heir, it’s me, will you do it? He said “sounds great.” It was awesome,” recalls Aaron. “MLB gave us the go ahead. It was a thrill.”

“It’s surreal because I spent many afternoons in the bleachers growing up,” said O’Heir who grew up in Lansing. “We got to go in the locker room talking to Ryne Sandberg. It was surreal.”

The film also features an LGBT theme, which Aaron said is especially important to him.

“This is the first LGBT themed movie that has ever been done with a major sports corporation. It was really cool to write something that was clean. I’ve never seen a movie like this before,” Aaron said.

“It’s not a gay movie. It’s about technology, it’s about friends. The main characters are gay but it’s inclusive and it doesn’t matter,” said O’Heir.

“I was very proud of how this film turned out. It turned out to be a very Chicago film. If that’s the stamp I make as a director, is making these kind of Chicago films, my life is great.” Aaron said. “I love the North Side, the West side, two of my favorite areas. Every film I make is a love letter to my hometown. Every film, Chicago is a huge character.”

Matthew Aaron honed his comedic skills at the famed Second City Theatre and has performed stand-up at multiple legendary venues such as The Comedy Store, The Improv and The Laugh Factory.

Since 2011 he has been the host of the wildly popular, Award nominated Entertainment & Comedy Internet Radio show “The Matthew Aaron Show.”

“Landline” is playing at the Music Box Theater this week and is on video on demand starting April 4th.

Jeff Hardy Says He’s Not Signing With WWE, Staying At Ring Of Honor

By Chuck Carroll

Sunday is going to be weird for Jeff Hardy. He’s going to be within a stone’s throw of 70,000+ rabid WWE fans at Camping World Stadium, but he says he won’t be on the card. Despite all of the rumors to the contrary, he denies that there will be a surprise appearance from the Hardy Boyz at WrestleMania. He says Matt and Jeff will be busy hosting a six-hour pre-show of sorts at the Broken Tailgate Party, and that’s as close as they’ll get to “The Grandest Stage of Them All.”

>>MORE: Special Edition of The Taz Show: Bodyslams & Beyond to air Sunday, April 2, 11 pm – 2 am ET

He also says they won’t be appearing on Monday Night RAW or SmackDown Live! on Tuesday, and that they’re going to be with Ring of Honor at least through the summer. In fact, Jeff Hardy is hoping that ROH will help him further his music ambitions. His dream is to be able to play music at a wrestling show, and he plans to pitch the idea to ROH officials at some point this weekend. It’s hard to envision WWE going for such an idea.

He’s just completed a new album with his band PEROXWHY?GEN and has plans to go on tour after it’s released. In fact, he was invited to perform two dates on the Warped Tour this summer, but declined because he didn’t feel he was quite ready to jam with guys he refers to as “major leaguers.”

Hardy says they take great pleasure in working for Ring of Honor and smaller independent shows where they have complete creative autonomy for now. They are pushing forward with the Broken Universe gimmicks as Anthem Media threatens legal action over their use, claiming they were created exclusively for Impact Wrestling. That is a claim Hardy says is not true. The idea that anyone would try to lay claim to characters created by him and his brother is heartbreaking to him. For the time being, they are restricted from using the characters in Ring of Honor after parent company Sinclair Broadcasting was served a cease-and-desist letter threatening legal action if any of the “Broken” elements were used. No “delete or “obsolete.” But Hardy isn’t upset at ROH’s decision to dial back their characters. He told me they did the right thing “just to play it safe” and be professional.

We covered their bitter split from Impact Wrestling, their future with Ring of Honor, when or if they will be returning to WWE and his music projects during a half-hour conversation that interrupted a study session for Saturday’s tag team title match against the Young Bucks. Hardy has been watching old ladder matches trying to get ideas to steal the show.

When last we spoke it seemed like things were going to turn out much differently than they did. How has life been treating you?

It’s been great. It’s very strange the way everything came about, but it’s for the better. I was with TNA for seven years, and I think deep down I was ready for a change. And so with the uncertainties of the company moving forward the time was right for me to explore some other options. And we showed up at Manhattan Mayhem, Ring of Honor’s big event, and it was just magical. It was a big surprise, and it felt good to be part of something different because I was in the same place for so long.

Now you’re ready for a change, but when we talked in December everything seemed so certain that you were going to re-sign with Impact. The Broken gimmick was working so well. What actually happened? There are a lot of rumors out there.

It’s pretty simple. When we last spoke, Billy Corgan who is a good friend of myself and Matt, he was out at my property when we were filming Delete or Decay. He was going to own the company, be the president and all that good stuff. Basically, if he owned the company right now, I’d still be under contract. But so many changes happened. When they bought him out or had a falling out with this other company and then another company, Anthem, came in. This other company leaves that I was negotiating with.

And so, wow, we don’t have a deal or anything. It was a fresh start with this Anthem crew. Things were just too uncertain, and it was just weird. I just thought that I had to make things different for my career. Right now the time is right. There were signs, I believe, from a higher power. Bottom line: if Billy was still there, I’d still be there. But the way that all went down, I was just ready to move on.

One of the things that had been reported was that they were really slow in getting you guys the contracts and then pretty much gave you an ultimatum to sign them or get out. Is there any truth to the abruptness of how it all went down?

Yeah, for sure. I was good to go with mine, but then Matt had some issues going on. So, time just moved on slowly. And basically it just didn’t work out because when these new owners came in and the other ones we negotiated with left… I went to Nashville and met with these guys, the Anthem guy and Aroluxe, the other company involved, and Billy was on his way out at that point. So, I was just kind of uncertain myself. And then the Aroluxe company was gone, and I was like, “What is going on here?”

Long story short, we couldn’t come to an agreement. They were very late. We offered to come drop the titles at the TV tapings in March, and they said we couldn’t do that unless we were under contract. And I was like, “That’s so silly. Oh my God, this is pro wrestling, anything is possible. Let’s do the right thing and come drop them to another team.” But that wasn’t good enough, so we basically vacated them and never lost them.

I wish them all the best. Seven years, I had a good time there. They were great to me and helped me through tough times. But it was just time to move on. So, yeah, very late contract negotiations.

We’re at a point now where there has been some public back and forth by both sides. Are you surprised at the way they’re trying to protect the Broken gimmick? That has to be a little disappointing given that you did invest seven years with the company.

It’s heartbreaking. I’m so passionate about any character I portray, whether it’s Willow, the Anti-Christ, the Charismatic Enigma, Itchweed… I’m so passionate about that. Nero is my legit middle name. Me not being able to be called Brother Nero is very offensive and heartbreaking. The highest-rated show last year was The Final Deletion, and that’s fact. The majority vote wins, and people dug that. And then they kind of (pooped) on it. That’s not cool.

And now with this lawsuit, we did this Ring of Honor pay-per-view out in Las Vegas, and we got these cease-and-desist letters. I couldn’t believe it. In the print it said TNA developed these characters specifically for Matt and Jeff Hardy, and that is so untrue. Matt developed himself and Brother Nero started to flow. I developed Brother Nero with the eyes and how I act. It’s all ours, and it is very sad and disappointing. It’s almost surreal-like, “Is this really happening?”

Does that mean TNA is trying to lay claim to all of your characters?

I don’t know anything about that because it didn’t say anything about Willow. That was prior to the whole Broken Universe stuff. I don’t think there is anything wrong with those characters. But for Matt they said he can’t do the motion of “delete” and you can’t use “Obsolete.” “Obsolete” is my song from our last band album. I can use that wherever I want to. Basically with mine it is that I can’t refer to myself as Brother Nero, and I can’t do the “delete” motion. And that’s it.

It’s like, “Are you telling me I can’t wear the contacts?” That’s just so silly. It always makes think, are they saying, “You can’t paint your eyelids because that was there on our show. You can’t do that with any other company. We own that.” It’s just so absurd. But it’s kind of inspiring at the same time.

What was your take on Sinclair’s (ROH parent company) reaction? Obviously, you were restricted in that match with what you could do.

They did the right thing just to play it safe. Just stay away from the jackets and don’t do the “delete” stuff. Naturally, fans are going to do that on their own. We just played ball and did the right thing until things are on more solid ground between both parties. So, yes, they handled it professionally.

You guys appear in Ring of Honor and quickly grab the tag titles. How has that ride been this past month?

It’s awesome. What a great team, even Joe [Koff]. What a cool dude and so reasonable and outgoing. It’s been great so far. I can’t wait until Saturday. It’s always challenging. I’ve been watching ladder matches today trying to come up with ideas because the Young Bucks are the best. We have their titles right now, and they’re going to be hanging high above the Ring of Honor ring. But so far it’s been great. What a great team and a great squad, and hopefully we’ll be there for a good amount of time.

Let’s talk about this ladder match. You and I have talked in the past about your fears of suffering head trauma in a match and concussions and leading to CTE. Are you still comfortable doing the crazy high spots? What can we expect to see?

It’s my comfort zone. I’d rather do a ladder match any day over a 30-minute Broadway regular match where so much technical stuff comes into play. It’s my claim to fame and my comfort zone. I do consider myself the master of ladders in pro wrestling. Going in there with guys like the Young Bucks and to be 39 years old now and thinking about this biggest Ring of Honor show in history. It’s pretty intimidating, but somehow it works, and I can’t help but love it. I worry about my back more. I know I’m going to end up taking a big fall or doing a Swanton and breaking ladders. But I don’t worry about it. I just look forward to it because the payoff is in the fear. When you’re kind of afraid of it and it’s all over and it’s great, the payoff is wonderful. The rush of adrenaline [is] wonderful. It’s the best, and I cannot wait to experience that Saturday night.

Let’s address the big elephant in the room. You have the ladder match Saturday night and then there’s another ladder match on Sunday… So, what are you and your brother doing on Sunday?

We are doing the Broken Tailgate Party. It’s going to be right near WrestleMania. It’s going to be super weird. For several years I didn’t want to do WrestleCon because I didn’t want to be anywhere near WrestleMania. Because if I was to be near WrestleMania, I would want to be in it. It’s going to be strange, but we’re doing a six-hour signing the day of Mania. And knowing they’re going to have a ladder match makes me think: why aren’t we in that? Because we should be. Oh well, maybe next year.

Rumor has it that WWE has presented you guys with contracts. Is there any truth to that?

No, because you have to go through so much testing and all of that. It’s a long process. But, no. We know some people there and naturally, after WrestleMania dies down, maybe a couple of months from now, we’ll see what’s possible. But there is no truth to that whatsoever.

So, we won’t be seeing you Monday or Tuesday, but maybe in a couple of months?

I want to take about three weeks off after Saturday. So, thank God we’re not wrestling Sunday because my body’s going to be all jacked up for sure. We’re also wrestling Friday night at the WrestleCon show. Those guys are amazing. We just wrestled Penta El Cero Miedo & Rey Fenix last weekend. It was so good.

Also on Friday night some friends of yours, the Rock ’n Roll Express, are going into the WWE Hall of Fame. You have to be pretty excited about that.

For sure. They were part of the Apocolypto deal. We had a little match with them. I still want to have a decent match with them. I love them to death. They’re the best. Hopefully I don’t know where or with what promotion, but we’ll have that dream match. But full congrats to them because they deserve it.

Let’s talk a little music. When we last talked you just put out your solo debut EP, Spawn of Me, and now you’ve done a live performance and did some live tracks. How’d that show go?

It was awesome. I went out to Nashville Thursday evening and rehearsed all day Friday. Then I did a wrestling show in Clarksville and stayed in the ring to do in-ring pics with a huge line. Then I changed and went straight to the bar and did 11 or 12 songs. And my voice was gone. Even during the meet-and-greet it was so embarrassing. I was so afraid because my voice was horrible. Luckily somehow I got through it. It wasn’t bad. It could have been worse. It was so natural, and it gave me such confidence that I can’t wait to do it again. It was a blast. The charisma was there. It was a great experience for me and gave me hope for the future.

How was the release of the “Spawn of Me” EP? It sounds like it was pretty successful.

I think so. I’m not sure exactly how much we sold because we never came out with any hard copies of that. But what’s so exciting right now is that week of the show in Clarksville I went to Nashville and we finished Precession of the Equinoxes. That’s our third band album. There are 14 tracks. It starts with spoken word and ends with a very dark spoken word song. It’s a roller coast ride of emotion. It goes from happiness to sadness to in between to all throughout the album. Hopefully that will be out around May or June. We’re getting the artwork together now for the hard copy. I’m very excited about that and super proud of it.

The new shirt up on JeffHardyBrand.com is the cover of the album. It’s a black-and-white theme. I’m in these vines. People seem to dig that shirt. Hopefully there’s going to be a lyric book inside of the album too. I’m a huge fan of going out and getting an actual CD. I’m more of a record-type of guy instead of downloading stuff. It should be great.

Your band PEROXWHY?GEN just finished recording. You now have a live show under your belt. Does that mean we could see you guys out on tour?

Yeah, hopefully so. As a matter of fact, I’ll probably mention something to Ring of Honor this weekend about playing at a live gig at one of the shows. I’ve always wanted to mix the music with the wrestling. So hopefully that will come true eventually. And definitely I hope to play many more shows throughout the year. I was actually so close to playing two dates on the Warped Tour this summer. They offered through my guitar player, and that’s huge. That’s like being in there with the major leaguers. I was so scared because I didn’t know if we could do it. That needs to be the full band with the heavy songs and all that. It was just too soon.

You just mentioned talking to Ring of Honor about doing a live performance at one of their shows. Have you guys re-signed there? How long are you going to be sticking around there?

It’s short-term. It’s through the summer. What’s cool about Ring of Honor is that we can still go out and work the indie dates. That’s another thing about the TNA deal was that they wanted to take our indy dates from us, and I really enjoy working the independent circuit. You meet some crazy, cool, interesting people and the shows have been so great as of late. I would say our Ring of Honor deals are through the summer. It’s a short-term deal and we’ll see how things go. We’ll test the waters for a while and hopefully help the company grow.

So Saturday isn’t going to the be the last time we see you guys in a Ring of Honor ring?

Oh, no. No, there’s going to be many more shows. Many more honorable shows.

Gabriel: Scouting Charlotte DT Larry Ogunjobi

By Greg Gabriel–

Editor’s note: You can read Gabriel’s other scouting reports on highly regarded NFL Draft prospects by clicking here.

(CBS) It’s just about a certainty that the Bears will select a defensive lineman in the NFL Draft in late April. And being that they did nab nose tackle John Jenkins but missed out on signing defensive tackle Ricky Jean-Francois in free agency, odds are they select a defensive tackle, which is a defensive end in the Bears’ vernacular.

If the Bears were to use the No. 3 overall pick on that position, it would most likely be Alabama’s Jonathan Allen. If they use No. 3 on another position or trade down, the need is still there and will be taken care of in a later round.

If that’s the case, one player that stands out in my mind is Charlotte defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi. The Bears know Ogunjobi well, as they coached him at the Senior Bowl. The easiest way to describe him is he’s a “poor man’s” Allen. Last month at the combine, Allen measured 6-foot-3, 286 pounds, while Ogunjobi checked in at 6-foot-3, 305 pounds. Allen’s arms were an inch longer at 33 5/8 inches, but Ogunjobi actually outperformed Allen in some of the measurable drills.

Ogunjobi ran a 4.97 in the 40-yard dash, while Allen ran a 5.00. Ogunjobi also registered more reps of 225 pounds (26-21) and had a slightly better vertical jump and long jump. Allen had an edge in two agility drills.

Ogunjobi was a four-year starter at Charlotte, which is a relatively new football program. Ogunjobi was the team’s star defensive player and constantly faced double teams. He still had excellent production with 62 total tackles and 2.5 sacks in 2015 and 65 total tackles and 3.0 sacks in 2016. For his career, he has 13 total sacks and 49 tackles for loss.

What I like is that he’s thick and powerful with explosive get-off. He stays low, can use his hands, sheds blocks quickly and dominates the point of attack. He plays with the strength and power he showed at the combine.

Where Ogunjobi needs improvement is with his pass rush. At Charlotte, he was more of a bull rusher who could consistently get a push and collapse the pocket. He needs to improve his ability to use moves and counter moves. While at the Senior Bowl, he showed that improvement and consistently won his one-on-one battles in the pass rush/pass block drills.

Ogunjobi is an ascending player with a high ceiling. Where does he go? My feeling is that he’s a solid second-round selection, and he will come in and be a strong contributor as a rookie.
