Job Openings Matches Number Of Unemployed For First Time In Decades

WASHINGTON, DC (CBS Local) – The U.S. job market reached a historic marker in March as the number of available jobs reportedly equaled the number of unemployed workers for the first time in two decades.

According to a new report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employers were advertising openings for 6.55 million positions in March. The May 8 release adds that 6.59 million Americans were unemployed at that time, meaning that there was 1.01 open jobs per unemployed worker in the country.

The Department of Labor said the nearly 6.6. million openings represented the most since the agency started tracking job advertisements in December 2000. The parity of jobs and job seekers is being called a historic oddity as the number of unemployed Americans is usually far above what’s currently available.

According to Market Watch, there were about 6.6 unemployed workers for every job available just after the Great Recession in 2009. Since that point, the gap has steadily shrunk until finally reaching this point in March.

Some economists are now saying that with all of the open positions available, the next number to rise in the job market will be salaries. “Employers beware,” Chris Rupkey of MUFG Bank said, via KBTX. “Wages have nowhere to go but up; it’s just a matter of time.”

While employers may have many spots to fill, the news isn’t as great for the 6.59 million people currently unemployed. A separate survey by the National Federation of Independent Business found that 88 percent of businesses said they couldn’t find workers who were qualified for the jobs they were applying for.

Chris Paul Not Celebrating Western Conference Finals Appearance

By Matt Citak

Heading into the 2017-18 season, there were not many ways one could criticize the career of Chris Paul.

The recently turned 33-year-old was the fourth overall selection of the 2005 NBA Draft. In his rookie season, Paul averaged 16.1 points, 7.8 assists, 5.1 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game. His performance earned him the 2006 NBA Rookie of the Year Award, as well as a spot on the NBA All-Rookie Team.

This was an amazing way to start a career. But for Paul, things would only go up from there.

Now playing in his 13th season, the veteran point guard has put together quite an impressive resume over the years.

9x NBA All-Star. 4x All-NBA First Team. 3x All-NBA Second Team. 1x All-NBA Third Team. 7x NBA All-Defensive First Team. 2x NBA All-Defensive Second Team. 4x NBA assists leader. 6x NBA steals leader. Not to mention career averages of 18.6 points, 9.8 assists, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.3 steals per game, with a career-shooting percentage of 47.2 percent.

Chris Paul #3 of the Houston Rockets drives past the defense of Donovan Mitchell #45 of the Utah Jazz in the second half during Game Three of Round Two of the 2018 NBA Playoffs at Vivint Smart Home Arena on May 4, 2018 in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Rockets beat the Jazz 113-92.

Chris Paul (Photo Credit: Gene Sweeney Jr./Getty Images)

There’s no denying that Paul will one day be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The former Wake Forest Demon Deacon has proved to be not only one of the best point guards in the NBA over the last 13 years, but also one of the greatest all-around players during that span.

For as great as Paul has been since taking the NBA by storm in 2005, all of his accomplishments have been on the personal side of the game.

The point guard had made four trips to the second round of the playoffs prior to this season, once with the New Orleans Hornets and three times with the Los Angeles Clippers. In two of those postseason appearances, Paul came within a game of reaching the conference finals.

Despite his domination on the court, Paul never got over the hump, falling short of the conference finals in each of those four tries. His nine All-Star Game appearances tied him with Dominique Wilkins for the most in NBA history for a player without a trip to a conference finals.

Knowing all of this, one would imagine that with the Houston Rockets up three games to one over the Utah Jazz heading into Tuesday night’s Game 5, Paul might feel a bit nervous. As close as he’s been to making the conference finals in the past, he’s always fallen just short.

Instead, what we witnessed was one of the greatest playoff performances in NBA history. With the taste of the Western Conference Finals on his tongue, the future Hall of Famer put together a jaw-dropping display of basketball genius.

Paul scored a career-playoff-high 41 points while dishing out 10 assists and picking up seven rebounds. He recorded zero turnovers throughout his 38 minutes, making it the first 40-point, 10-assist, no-turnover playoff line since turnovers became an official stat 40 years ago, according to Elias Sports Bureau.

Paul was simply unworldly. He shot 13-of-22 from the field, including 8-of-10 from the three-point line (matching his career playoff high for made 3s) and 7-of-8 from the free throw line. With the veteran on the court, Houston outscored Utah by 20 points.

But the 13-year vet seemed to save his best for the fourth quarter, where he scored 20 points while playing the entire 12 minutes. His 20 points set a career-high for points in a quarter, regular season or postseason. He either scored or assisted on 26 of Houston’s 37 points in the final frame, which included all 18 of the team’s points over the last six minutes of the game.

To say he was saving his best for last would be an understatement. The Rockets entered the fourth quarter trailing by three points, and Paul was clearly not about to risk having the series go back to Utah for a Game 6.

Now that he has the monkey off of his back, so to speak, Paul still has a lot left to prove.

Following Tuesday’s win, the point guard was asked if he would be celebrating his first trip to a Conference Finals. His response?

“Not at all. Who plays for just that?”

Despite finishing the regular season with the NBA’s best record, and seven games ahead of the Golden State Warriors, the Rockets still find themselves as underdogs heading into their Western Conference Finals matchup. Houston won two of the three regular-season meetings between the two teams, and will also have home-court advantage, yet Vegas still believes the defending champions will make their fourth consecutive trip to the NBA Finals.

So while Paul may feel slightly relieved to finally get over the hump, don’t believe for a second that he is satisfied.

Because he, along with the rest of the Houston Rockets, have only one goal in mind.

“We’ve got eight more wins to get…” said Paul following the final buzzer Tuesday.

Vegas may not believe in Houston, but if Paul can put together more performances like his Game 5 gem, then the future Hall of Famer may make his first appearance in the NBA Finals this postseason as well.

Capitals Finally End Their Eastern Conference Finals Drought

By Steve Silverman

At the start of the playoffs, the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Nashville Predators and the Winnipeg Jets were on a second-round collision course.

The Jets finished with the second-best record in the league, and since both were situated in the NHL’s Central Division, they were destined to meet in the second round as long as they didn’t slip on a banana peel in the first round.

While the Preds had a bit of a problem with the Colorado Avalanche, they survived and advanced. The Jets looked overpowering in dismissing the Minnesota Wild.

This second-round series between the two Western Conference powers has been a classic, worthy of being played in the Conference Final, or, gasp, the Stanley Cup Final.

That would require the NHL powers-that-be to change the Stanley Cup format, and there may not be enough support for that to happen any time soon.

So enjoy Nashville and Winnipeg for what it is. These two teams will meet in a seventh-game finale Thursday night in Nashville, and winning on the road has been a regular occurrence in this series. The Jets trounced the Preds in Games 1 and 5 in Nashville, while the Predators had their two best performances in Games 4 and 6 before the wild-eyed fans at the MTS Center in Winnipeg.

Neither team has won consecutive games in this series, and if that pattern holds, the Jets will survive Game 7 and advance to the Western Conference Final against the no-longer-surprising Vegas Golden Knights.

The Jets can string goals together in abundance when they are on their game, and they have a powerful foursome in Mark Scheifele, Blake Wheeler, Dustin Byfuglien and Paul Stastny leading the way. Scheifele has 14 points (nine goals and five assists), but Wheeler (13), Byfuglien (12) an Stastny (11) are right behind.

In addition to those primary scorers, the Jets have explosive Patrik Laine and Kyle Connor in supporting roles – at least for now.

Laine may have the second hardest shot in the league behind Alex Ovechkin and Connor showed off his magic with his three-point night (two goals, one assist) in Game 5.

The Preds got a shutout from Pekka Rinne in Game 6, and that was an admirable performance for last year’s Stanley Cup Finalists.

They had just been taken apart at home, and they needed to come up with a superior effort to stay alive. Head coach Peter Laviolette got just that as the Preds played brilliant defensive hockey and two goals each from Viktor Arvidsson and Filip Forsberg.

You can easily see either team winning this game. The Predators seem to be a bit better at the all-around game, have home ice and are motivated by getting to the Stanley Cup Final a year ago and losing.

The Jets are explosive, hungry and have proven they can win big games on the road.

The prediction here is that the upstart Jets throw the hockey world on its ear and win the seventh game on the road. It may take overtime, but the Jets will survive and advance.

Misery finally ends for Ovechkin, Capitals

The fate of the franchise was Evgeny Kuzentsov’s stick Monday night.

He had just taken a pass from Alex Ovechkin in overtime, split the Penguins defense and was in alone on Matt Murray. This was the opportunity that the Caps had waited on for so many years as they had a chance to get to the Eastern Conference Final and eliminate Pittsburgh.

All Kuznetsov had to do was make one move to his backhand, and then bring the puck to his forehand. He slid the disc past Murray and into the back of the cage for the 2-1 overtime winner that allowed the long-beleaguered Caps to win the series in six games.

There were howls of primordial joy emanating from the Washington lockerroom after climbing Mount Everest, and the loudest came from Ovechkin. The Stanley Cup playoffs have always been a tortured journey for this franchise, but there is true relief for Ovechkin, Kuznetsov, Nicklas Backstrom, John Carlson and head coach Barry Trotz.

“We beat the Pittsburgh Penguins. They’re a hell of a hockey team,” Trotz said. “We’re only halfway. We haven’t done anything yet. It’s a good feeling getting by the Penguins but there’s more to do.”

The Caps begin a fresh climb Friday night against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

While the Caps have already been through the emotional ringer in winning two six-game series against the Columbus Blue Jackets and Pens, the Lightning have cruised in five-game wins over the New Jersey Devils and Boston Bruins.

The Lightning have pointed to their own deficiencies in suffering the only losses in both series, and they have not been beaten in any game where they have played well.

Will the emotionally relieved Caps keep on riding their crest and get to the Stanley Cup Final, or are sharp and efficient Lightning prepared to continue their ride by dispatching the Caps?

Look for Washington to stumble early in this series, but raise their game when they return home for Game 3. They will find a way to engage the Bolts the way neither the Devils nor the Bruins could.

Washington gets to the Stanley Cup Final, and prepares for even more drama.

The tongue wags no more

Brad Marchand is one of the best left wings in the league, and he excels at agitating opponents and putting the puck in the net.

He has scored 110 goals in the last three season along with 121 assists, he kills penalties and is featured on the Bruins power play. When it comes to scoring game-winning goals, he had eight in each of the last two seasons.

gettyimages 955428840 Capitals Finally End Their Eastern Conference Finals Drought

Credit: Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images

He is also an agitator of the first order. Non-stop trash-talking is his signature, and that’s fine.

However, the league has suspended him six times for offenses like elbowing, clipping, low-bridging and spearing. He was suspended five games earlier this year for delivering an elbow to the head of New Jersey’s Marcus Johansson.

Then came this year’s playoffs and a pair of licking incidents involving Toronto’s Leo Komarov and Tampa Bay’s Ryan Callahan.

He wasn’t suspended for either, but the league issued a cease-and-desist order prior to the latter part of the Boston-Tampa Bay series.

The question is why the Bruins didn’t act on this one themselves. The leadership in the lockerroom – meaning captain Zdeno Chara and superb center Patrice Bergeron – needed to quash Marchand’s lick-first tendencies.

If those two couldn’t have done it, it was up to head coach Bruce Cassidy and general manager Don Sweeney to quit the wet-willy maneuver.

This is supposed to be one of the league’s flagship franchises, the team that was graced by Bobby Orr, Johnny Bucyk, Gerry Cheevers and Ray Bourque. There are literally dozens of other classy players to mention, and Marchand did not bring glory to any of them. He pretty much disgraced them.

Marchand appeared contrite as the Bruins held their exit interviews following their series defeat to the Lightning. Perhaps he means it, or perhaps he doesn’t. However, he needs to take a long look in the mirror and realize that great players produce in the biggest games, and don’t spend their energy trying to give their opponents a tongue bath.

It’s time for Marchand to walk the walk of a superstar, and put his weasel ways behind him.

Mom Warns About ‘Deodorant Challenge’ After Teen Is Badly Burned

YATE, ENGLAND (CBS Local) – A mother in England is warning parents on social media about a dangerous fad that left her daughter with severe burns. Jamie Prescott says the “Deodorant Challenge” is to blame for wounds on her 15-year-old’s arm that are so bad they may require surgery.

The Details:

  • The Deodorant Challenge left a teen in England with severe burns to her arm
  • The teen’s mother posted pictures of the stunt to warn other parents
  • The prank is one of several dangerous acts teens have engaged in to get attention on social media

Like the Tide Pod, cinnamon, condom snorting, and fire challenges, the Deodorant Challenge is another in a long line of stunts teens and young adults have started in an attempt to gain attention on social media. Prescott posted a graphic warning on Facebook after her daughter Ellie participated in the challenge – which involves spraying aerosol deodorant on your bare skin for as long as possible.

Warning: The images below may be disturbing to some viewers

“She [daughter Ellie] still regularly has to see a practice nurse and go to the surgery once a week,” Prescott told Somerset Live“The incident happened on Tuesday (April 18), but I did not notice anything until she came home from school on the Wednesday as it had blistered up a lot by that stage.”

The injured teen added that she went to meet some friends in a park when they told her to put her arm out and take the Deodorant Challenge. “It seems fairly common, a lot of people have showed me their arms after doing it a while ago,” Ellie Prescott added.

“This challenge really needs to be made as public as possible. It’s just horrendous and needs stopping,” Ellie’s mother declared.

According to reports, the Deodorant Challenge has actually been around for at least four years. However, Mrs. Prescott’s graphic message is restarting the conversation about the foolish act.

In the United States, young adults have found other ways to burn their arms. In a video posted to YouTube on Feb. 4, an unidentified man tried to start the “Hot Coil Challenge” by intentionally burning his flesh on a red-hot stove. That has been viewed over 500,000 times.

Satellite Photos Show Lava-Oozing Volcano Fissures On Hawaii’s Big Island

CHICAGO (CBS) — Images taken on NASA’s Terra satellite show volcano fissures that have oozed lava and gas in recent days on Hawaii’s Big Island. The fissures are located in the East Riff Zone of the Kilauea volcano, which began erupting last week.

One image shows hot spots — fissures and new lava flow as of Sunday — in yellow. The red areas in the image, taken from the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on the Terra satellite, depict vegetation.

The grey and black areas show old lava flows, according to NASA.

Another image, also from Sunday, shows yellow and green streaks depicting sulfur dioxide gas, which can be dangerous at high levels.

The images were taken before two new vents opened up Tuesday on Hawaii’s Big Island. Those vents prompted Hawaii County to issue a cellphone alert ordering stragglers in Lanipuna Gardens to leave immediately.

Authorities had previously ordered nearly 2,000 residents to leave the community and the neighboring Leilani Estates, both located in the mostly rural district of Puna on Hawaii’s Big Island. But some had ignored the order and stayed to watch over their property.

“There were a number of people at their residences,” Talmadge Magno, the administrator for Hawaii County Civil Defense, said at a news briefing. There was no sign of holdouts in Lanipuna afterward, he said.

There are 14 lava-and-gas producing fissures in Leilani Estates, after the two new ones formed Tuesday. But the flow of lava is not constant.

Edwin Montoya, 76, had planned to stay to care for animals and keep looters away from his family’s property in the community. But he was forced to evacuate after the new fissures emerged, including one just a mile away.

“I’m in my truck right now on my way up the road,” he said. “The police came down here and made me.”

https://www.cbsnews.com/video/buildings-in-path-of-kilauea-volcano-lava-destroyed/

Both Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens are in a forested, remote part of the Big Island on the eastern flank of Kilauea volcano, which has been erupting continuously since 1983. In recent years the volcano has mostly released lava in hard-to-reach areas inside a national park or along the coastline. But last week, vents popped open and released lava, gas and steam inside residential neighborhoods.

There is no indication when the eruption might stop, or how far the lava might spread.

Officials warn that lava could flow downhill and burn areas that are not currently in danger, and toxic volcanic gas could kill people, especially the elderly and those with breathing problems.

Hawaii Gov. David Ige told evacuees he has called the White House and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to tell officials that he believes the state will need help to deal with the volcano on the Big Island.

A total of 36 structures, including 26 confirmed homes, have been destroyed. Aerial surveys cannot make out whether some of the structures are homes or other types of buildings.

Video: Helicopter Lifts Horse From Construction Trench

SHADOW HILLS, CA (CBS LOCAL) – Los Angeles County Fire first responders rescued a horse from a construction trench Tuesday afternoon in Shadow Hills, California.

The horse named Misty was uninjured after a fall into the trench but had to lifted with the aid of a LA County Fire helicopter.

The hours long rescue began after the horse strayed from nearby ranch property near Clybourne Avenue according to the Los Angeles Daily News.

Officials told the paper they were unclear how the horse ended up in the trench which was constructed with cinder blocks and iron bars.

Los Angeles Animal Services said in a Facebook post Tuesday they were in Shadow Hills helping Misty at the time of the incident. They were called in soon after the horse was found in the trench. “Our SMART team has been giving her water and food as they await the air rescue on its way,” they posted on Facebook along with pictures of Misty.

Officials were concerned the noise that would be created while trying to dig the horse out could be detrimental to the horse so fire and animal rescue officials both determined that an air rescue was the safest.

“We’ve talked about digging a trench to walk the horse out, but she isn’t doing very well with people,” said Officer Armando Navarette, an official with the animal rescue team.

The horse was given a sedative then hoisted into the air. Misty was set down nearby to walk off the medication that was used to calm her down.

One Year Since James Comey Fired, President Trump Still At Odds With FBI

NEW YORK (CBS Local) — A year ago today, President Donald Trump fired FBI Director James Comey and announced “a new beginning for our crown jewel of law enforcement.”

Since then, Trump has waged a war of words about reach and authority with the agency, especially since the launch of Robert Mueller’s special investigation into the 2016 U.S. presidential election, questions about bias around the FBI’s investigation of Hillary Clinton’s email servers, and character attacks on both sides.

Of course, the true impact of Comey’s ouster won’t be realized until Mueller’s investigation (and any fallout from it) concludes.

“Since we don’t yet know the outcome of the Mueller inquiry, it’s difficult to fully assess the impact of the Comey firing. But it’s already clear that Trump’s decision to dismiss the FBI director produced a wide-ranging investigation that has drained a great deal of time and energy from Trump’s presidency,” Dr. Larry Sabato, Director of the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics, tells CBS Local. “There are even some similarities to Watergate, though we aren’t at that level of scandal yet, and may never get there.”

In February, Trump lashed out at the FBI, saying the agency “missed all of the many signals” sent by the suspect in the Florida school shooting and arguing they are “spending too much time trying to prove Russian collusion with the Trump campaign.”

Trump said on Twitter: “This is not acceptable. They are spending too much time trying to prove Russian collusion with the Trump campaign – there is no collusion. Get back to the basics and make us all proud!”

The FBI’s acknowledgment that it mishandled a tip prompted a sharp rebuke from its boss, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and a call from Florida’s Republican Gov. Rick Scott, a Trump ally, for FBI Director Christopher Wray to resign.

For his part since being fired, Comey has been far from quiet. During his two days of testimony before Congress, the former FBI head directly suggested push to launch the Russia investigation led to his firing.

“There’s no doubt that it’s a fair judgment, it’s my judgment, that I was fired because of the Russia investigation,” he said. “The nature of the FBI and the nature of its work requires that it not be the subject of political consideration and, on top of that, you have the Russia investigation itself is vital because of the threat.”

Trump’s legal team fired back, citing documents that Trump’s campaign was not under investigation.

It got uglier.

In April, the former FBI hed suggested Trump may be “morally unfit to be president,” and revealed his assumption that Hillary Clinton was going to win the 2016 presidential election.

This assumption, Comey says, influenced his decision to send a letter to Congress in October 2016, just before the election, in which he revealed that new emails had surfaced that “appear to be pertinent” to the FBI’s closed investigation of Clinton’s use of a private email server.

This disclosure is seen as a factor in Clinton’s loss.

Comey’s speaking out prompted a series of tweets from the president, labeling Comey a “slimeball” and “WORST FBI Director in history, by far,” while Trump said he “hardly even knew this guy.”

Then came Comey’s book “A Higher Loyalty,” claiming the president’s leadership was “ego driven and about personal loyalty.”

Comey said an early meeting felt like “Sammy the Bull’s Cosa Nostra induction ceremony,” referring to mobster Sammy Gravano, one of John Gotti’s old henchmen.

In his memo about the second meeting with Trump, Comey wrote how the president asked about his future, saying “so what do you want to do?” Comey said Trump told him “about 20 people” wanted Comey’s job, but the president would understand if Comey “wanted to walk away after all he had been through.”

And then Comey’s actual memos on reached Capitol Hill last month, as members of Congress sought answers about Clinton’s email servers once and for all.

Two sources told CBS News’ chief White House correspondent Major Garrett the president approved the transmission of the memos after receiving recommendations from top Justice Department officials.

The president tweeted that night saying the memos “show clearly that there was NO COLLUSION and NO OBSTRUCTION.”

The animosity appears to have gone both ways, as last week FBI lawyer Lisa Page resigned in the wake of her public affair with FBI agent Peter Strzok and the revelation of the couple’s anti-Trump text messages.

As for Comey, he took to twitter to reflect on his year since leaving the agency.

“Missing the people of the FBI today,” he wrote. “Thank you for your commitment to truth and for all the good you do for this country.”

How Climate Change Is Making Allergy Season Worse

CHICAGO (CBS) — This spring is predicted to be another tough season for allergy sufferers – partly thanks to warming global temperatures. The warm weather is arriving up to 20 days earlier this year in some places and one study finds pollen counts have been rising every year since 2000.

“The climate and the weather has an impact on the start, the duration, and the intensity of allergy season. With global warming, we know last year was one of the hottest on record, as well as increased carbon dioxide emissions. This all fuels the growth of plants, which means more pollen, earlier pollen, and pollen that stays around longer,” Dr. Tara Narula told “CBS This Morning” Friday.  “In 2000, there were about 8,000 pollen grains per meter cubed. In 2040, it’s projected to be around 20,000.”

According to Narula, one of the best things to do is get a jump-start on dealing with your allergies.

“So about two weeks before the season starts you want to start taking either your over-the-counter meds or your prescription meds,” she said. “There are things like allergy shots and now sublingual [under the tongue] medicines that you can take, immunotherapy.”

In addition to allergy medicine, Narula recommended lifestyle changes including staying indoors during peak hours, from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m., changing your clothes frequently, showering before bed, wearing glasses to protect your eyes, and using an air conditioner.

Indiana GOP Hopes Nasty Primary Won’t Haunt Senate Candidate

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana Republicans who picked wealthy former state lawmaker Mike Braun as their Senate candidate now are hoping he’s not too battered from a grueling primary to mount an effective challenge against a vulnerable Democratic incumbent.

President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence have scheduled a campaign rally on Thursday — just two days after the primary, signaling a push to stir GOP unity behind Braun ahead of his fall campaign against Sen. Joe Donnelly. That visit — in Elkhart, near Donnelly’s home turf — will be followed next week with another visit to the state by Pence, Indiana’s former governor.

“It’s still a very Republican state. But anytime you have a divisive primary, it’s going to obviously help Donnelly,” Republican Indiana donor Bob Grand said during a recent interview. “You can count on the fact that Vice President Pence will do everything he can to bring us all together.”

Braun didn’t seem to show any concern Tuesday night while basking in the glow of supporters after his double-digit victory over two congressmen — Todd Rokita and Luke Messer.

Braun, who owns a national auto parts distribution business, said his victory is a sign voters are disenchanted with “business as usual” and pointed to several other Republican “outsider” senators who entered politics from the business world.

“If we get enough of us there, I think we’ll actually start to solve some of these issues that have been vexing politicians,” Braun said.

Democrats, who need to retain seats like Donnelly’s and make gains elsewhere to regain Senate control, cautioned Republicans that they shouldn’t get too cocky. While the GOP candidates were tearing each other apart for the better part of a year, Donnelly was flying under the radar and raising money. In recent days, he has been touring the state in an RV, a campaign move borrowed from popular former GOP Gov. Mitch Daniels.

On Tuesday, Donnelly said he was puzzled by Braun’s claim of being an outsider, telling reporters, “as far as I know he served in the state Legislature.” He also questioned the campaign’s focus on loyalty to Trump, stating that his own campaign would be about issues like jobs and health care. At the same time, he highlighted his record of bipartisanship and noted that he often votes in line with the president.

“The people of Indiana are my boss,” he said. “You don’t work for the president, you don’t work for a party — you work for the people of Indiana.”

Braun’s victory was an outcome few expected when he launched his campaign in August against the more established political brands of Messer and Rokita.

Part of Braun’s success hinged on a more than $5 million loan he made to his campaign, which was used to carpet bomb television with ads characterizing himself as an “outsider.”

Tom Mote, 66, of Indianapolis voted for Braun. But he was less optimistic about his party’s chances of beating Donnelly in November.

“Donnelly’s been very low-key and not very controversial,” said Mote. “It’s hard to beat an incumbent.”

All of the GOP candidates were the subject of unflattering news stories.

Over the past year, Braun and other Republicans have attacked Donnelly over stock he held in a family business that outsourced jobs to Mexico — stock Donnelly sold in the wake a story by The Associated Press on the arrangement.

But Braun, too, has his own liabilities with outsourcing. His own business regularly does business with manufacturers in China. And he has been sued by employees over working conditions.

Family Name Helps Pence Brother Win GOP Bid For Indiana Congressional Seat

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The brother of Vice President Mike Pence capitalized on his famous name and backing from other top Republicans to win an Indiana congressional primary against an entrepreneur who mostly self-funded his campaign.

Columbus businessman Greg Pence has never held a public office. Still, he easily won the primary Tuesday, largely because of his younger brother, who represented the 6th District for a dozen years before becoming Indiana governor.

Pence, 61, is a Marine veteran and owner of two antique malls. He once ran a now-bankrupt chain of Tobacco Road convenience stores.

“I’m ready to serve again,” Pence told supporters Tuesday night. “This victory is thanks to you, the many Hoosiers who have helped build this campaign from the ground up and voted for us.”

His closest GOP rival was Muncie entrepreneur Jonathan Lamb, who loaned his campaign around $800,000 in an effort to keep pace with Pence. Pence had raised $1.2 million and spent nearly $1 million as of mid-April, making it the most expensive race among Indiana’s congressional districts.

The seat is open because incumbent Rep. Luke Messer sought the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate, losing Tuesday in the primary.

Lamb, 36, criticized his opponent for relying on the Pence name and dodging debates. He said he had a hard time telling where Pence stands on issues, although both profess support for most of President Donald Trump’s agenda.

Pence said in a recent interview that his family name is a “good name” and that he prefers meeting voters instead of debating.

He has said he would focus on issues such as infrastructure, veterans’ affairs, fixing the immigration system and health care.

Some voters who cast ballots for Pence cited his more famous brother and support for Trump as reasons for backing him.

“He comes from a good family,” said Ken Branch, a 57-year-old autoworker from New Palestine, Indiana, who voted at a polling site in a funeral home southeast of Indianapolis. “I like what they stand for — what I would call Christian values.”

Also running in the GOP primary were Stephen MacKenzie, Mike Campbell and Jeff Smith.

In November, Pence will face Jeannine Lee Lake, publisher of a bimonthly newspaper in Muncie called “The Good News.” She was the top vote-getter among six Democrats. Pence will be the favorite in the heavily Republican district.

Some Of Bears Rookie Roquan Smith’s Stolen Property Recovered In Georgia

(CBS) — Chicago Bears rookie linebacker got back most of the items stolen from his car over the weekend, and police expected to charge the suspect soon.

The first-round draft pick’s team-issued iPad, along with three of Smith’s Georgia Bulldogs jerseys, his Bulldogs helmet, a Bulldogs lacrosse jersey, two watches, four pairs of headphones, a set of Bluetooth speakers, Nike shoes, a cell phone, a GPS system, books, and other items were stolen from his 2018 BMW X5 last weekend in Athens, Georgia.

His car had been parked in his apartment complex’s parking garage at the time.

Athens-Clarke County Police confirmed Wednesday morning that detectives were able to identify a suspect from fingerprints recovered at the scene. Police found some of the stolen property at the suspect’s home.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Smith’s iPad was not among the recovered items. The iPad serves as the team’s playbook, and the Tribune reported the team was able to remotely wipe the password-protected tablet.

Smith thanked police for recovering his possessions.

“Good morning. I would personally like to thank everyone for their kind words and prayers as Athens-Clarke County Police Department worked very hard to identify the individual responsible for this. It was definitely huge,” Smith said in a video posted on Twitter. “I would also like to thank many of you who spread the information over various social media outlets. Due to the prompt attention by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, I was able to recover most of my items as well as the individual being identified. I’d just like to thank you guys so much.”

According to published reports, police expected to obtain an arrest warrant for the teenage suspect soon, and planned to charge him with a felony in connection with the theft. The teen reportedly attends the University of Georgia.

Buy Tires On Amazon, Install Them At Sears

NEW YORK (AP) — Shoppers will be able to buy any brand of tires on Amazon.com, have them shipped to a Sears Auto Center and then bring in their car to get them installed.

It’s the latest deal between Sears and Amazon as the struggling department store operator seeks to boost sales. Last year, Amazon began selling Sears’s Kenmore brand of ovens, washers and other appliances.

Sears said Wednesday that Amazon shoppers can now ship tires to 47 Sears Auto Centers in eight cities, including Chicago, Dallas and New York. It plans to eventually roll it out to all 400 of its auto centers nationwide in the coming weeks. As part of the deal, Sears said its DieHard brand of tires are available on Amazon for the first time.

Other retailers have been teaming up with Amazon.com Inc., hoping to reach the online retailer’s millions of customers. Best Buy, the electronics store chain, said last month that it will be the exclusive seller of Amazon-powered smart TVs. And Chico’s recently announced that it would sell its women’s clothing on the site.

Shares of Sears Holdings Corp., which are down 70 percent in the last year, spiked 18 percent to $3.26 after the deal was announced.

Police: 95-Year-Old Arrested For Slapping Granddaughter With Slipper

DAYTONA BEACH, FL (CBS Local) – A Florida great grandmother now has an arrest record after police say they were forced to take the 95-year-old to jail for slapping her granddaughter with a slipper.

The Details:

  • 95-year-old Hattie Reynolds was arrested after slapping her granddaughter with a slipper
  • Daytona Beach police say they had to take her into custody due to state domestic violence laws
  • Reynolds says her 46-year-old granddaughter was using up all of the senior’s air conditioning

Daytona Beach Police say that Hattie Reynolds called the department’s non-emergency number looking for help on May 5. The 95-year-old homeowner reportedly wanted help getting her granddaughter, Janeen Williams, out of bed after the senior accused her of being lazy and using up all of her home’s air conditioning.

“I ain’t got nothing to pay bill on air condition all the time for her to go into the room,” Reynolds told a dispatcher, according to The Daytona Beach News-Journal. “She won’t get out of my bed. I want her out of the bed, I don’t want to get myself in trouble.”

However, things quickly escalated and officers say a shouting match between the two relatives ended with the elderly woman slapping the 46-year-old across the face with a slipper.

Daytona Beach Police Chief Craig Capri told reporters that Reynolds was no threat, but state law on domestic violence incidents require police to arrest her after she admitted to striking her AC-hogging granddaughter. “Under the law domestic violence is a very serious offense and officers’ hands are tied,” Capri explained.

The police chief added that his officers made sure the slipper-slapping grandmother was made as comfortable as possible while she spent the night in jail. Reynolds was released on her own recognizance the following day. “Only my feet hurt and I need to sit,” the 95-year-old said after returning home.

Williams refused to give officers a statement and also did not press charges against her grandmother. The 46-year-old didn’t say if she would start listening to Reynolds and stop using up all the air conditioning.

CPD Sergeant Critically Injured Helping Save Disabled Woman From Fire

CHICAGO (CBS) — A Chicago police sergeant was in critical condition Wednesday morning, after suffering smoke inhalation injuries while trying to rescue a disabled woman who also was severely injured in a house fire in the South Chicago neighborhood.

The fire started around 3 a.m. at a home near 80th and Muskegon. Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago said a mother and father in the home heard the smoke detector going off, and tried to get their disabled adult daughter out of the home, but could not reach her.

When the mother and father got outside, they flagged down a group of police officers, who went inside with the father to try and get her out, according to Santiago. A short time later, firefighters arrived and went inside the home, where they found the disabled woman face-down under a pile of debris.

The woman suffered severe burns and smoke inhalation injuries, and was in critical condition Wednesday morning at the University of Chicago trauma center.

Police Supt. Eddie Johnson said two police officers and two sergeants who went into the home to help rescue the woman also were taken to the U of C trauma center. While the two officers and one sergeant were later released from the hospital, another sergeant remained in critical condition late Wednesday morning with smoke inhalation injuries.

The superintendent said that sergeant was intubated until his condition improves.

“I ask that all Chicagoans come together and pray for that victim of this fire, and for the sergeant who were among a group of heroes that ran toward the danger for the sake of others,” he said.

Santiago said smoke inhalation often causes heat-related injuries to the throat, because of the temperature of the smoke being inhaled. Johnson said the sergeant’s family is very optimistic he will be able to make a full recovery.

Flames from the fire spread to an adjacent home before the fire was extinguished. The neighboring home was evacuated.

Red Cross workers provided assistance with the displaced residents to try and find them temporary shelter.

Santiago said it appears the fire was caused by smoking inside the home.

Man Charged With Attempted Murder Worked As Substitute Teacher While Out On Bail

CHICAGO (CBS) — The Cicero school district was hoping to put parents’ concerns to rest, after suspending a substitute teacher months after he was charged with attempted murder and set free on bail.

Andres Rodriguez, 39, was arrested in July of last year, after he allegedly shot a man following a traffic dispute in Tinley Park.

Police said Rodriguez bumped into a vehicle in the 6900 block of 173rd Place, leading to a physical fight. He then allegedly shot the victim seven times.

He has been charged with attempted murder and was released on $500,000 bail.

At the time, he was working as a teacher in Joliet, but was suspended in August. Two weeks later, he started a new job as a substitute teacher at Unity Junior High School in Cicero.

Learning Rodriguez had been working at their children’s school while facing attempted murder charges did not sit well with some parents.

“The school didn’t do anything to tell us. I mean, aren’t they supposed to make us aware of these things that happened to our kids? That’s kind of dangerous,” Jose Cruz said Tuesday night.

Town and school officials declined to go on camera, but in a statement Wednesday morning, District 99 said Rodriguez has not been on school grounds since the middle of February, when he was placed on leave, after the district learned of the criminal case.

“Upon learning of this matter, District 99 immediately engaged its administrators, attorneys, and professionals with a directive to take any and all action to protect the interests of the students and the District. District 99 performed all necessary due diligence and administered proper employment action within the legal limits of the law, which included immediately placing the employee on leave from the District. This employee has been on leave and has not been on District grounds since February 16, 2018. Since such time, this employee has had no contact with any students, staff, or parents of District 99. As law enforcement has an active and pending investigation of Andres Rodriguez relative to the allegations against him, the District is not able to disclose any additional information.” – statement from District 99 Superintendent Rodolfo Hernandez

Connecticut Lawmakers Pass Ban On Bump Stocks

CHICAGO (CBS/AP) — Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said Tuesday he will sign newly passed legislation that bans devices enabling guns to fire like automatic weapons.

“I have yet to hear one legitimate reason why anyone needs to own a device that can fire 90 bullets every 10 seconds,” said the Democrat, shortly after the state Senate approved the bump stock legislation by a vote of 26-10. The same bill cleared the House of Representatives last week, 114-35.

Democratic Sen. Paul Doyle, of Wethersfield, said at least eight states have banned the gun enhancements. Lawmakers were prompted to pass such legislation following an October shooting at a Las Vegas concert that left 58 people dead and hundreds of others injured. Police say bump stocks were used in that crime.

Connecticut’s bill makes it a class D felony, punishable by up to five years in prison, a fine of up to $5,000, or both, for selling, offering to sell, purchasing, possessing, using and manufacturing a so-called “rate of fire enhancement.”

There’s an exception in the legislation for licensed firearms manufacturers fulfilling a military contract.

The bill marks one of the first major pieces of gun control-related legislation since the wide-ranging package Connecticut enacted following the 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

In 2016, Connecticut enacted a law requiring subjects of temporary restraining orders to transfer any firearms to police or a firearms dealer within 24 hours of being served a temporary restraining order. The weapons would be returned if a judge determines at an expedited hearing not to impose a formal restraining order.

Republican Sen. John Kissel, of Enfield, questioned why this latest bill was needed. He and other opponents brought up how bump stocks haven’t been used in any Connecticut crimes, to their knowledge.

“You’d be hard pressed to find a state in the United States that has tougher gun laws right now than state of Connecticut,” he said. “At some point, we just don’t need more gun laws in the state of Connecticut.”

Kissel also raised concern about owners not being compensated by the state after being required to destroy or turn in their devices.

CIA Chief Nominee Gina Haspel Vows Not To Restart Interrogation Program

(CNN) — Gina Haspel, President Donald Trump’s pick to be the next CIA director, pledged Wednesday she would not restart the CIA’s detention and interrogation program and that she would not follow an order that she found morally objectionable.

“I would not allow CIA to undertake activity that I thought was immoral, even if it was technically legal,” Haspel said. “I would absolutely not permit it.”

Haspel was pressed at her confirmation hearing by Senate Intelligence Committee’s top Democrat Virginia Sen. Mark Warner and other Democrats about her views on the George W. Bush administration’s interrogation program as well as her role in it.

Democrats asked Haspel for more details about her time supervising one of the CIA’s black sites, and her role in the destruction of CIA interrogation tapes.

“Do you believe program was consistent with American values?” Warner asked Haspel.

Haspel responded by saying that “we have decided to hold ourselves to a stricter moral standard,” but she did not weigh in on her views about the program itself.

Haspel told the committee that the decision to destroy the tapes was not hers, but she said she was “absolutely an advocate” if it could be done legally.

“I absolutely was an advocate, if we could within and conforming to US law, and if we could get policy concurrence to eliminate the security risk posed to our officers by those tapes,” Haspel told Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California.

In her opening statement, Haspel said she would not restart the interrogation program in an effort to convince skeptical senators to back her nomination.

“Having served in that tumultuous time, I can offer you my personal commitment, clearly and without reservation, that under my leadership, on my watch, CIA will not restart such a detention and interrogation program,” Haspel said in her opening statement, adding, “I fully support the detainee treatment required by law, and just as importantly, I will keep CIA focused on our collection and analysis missions that can best leverage the expertise found we have at the agency.”

Haspel added that she believes it’s now clear that the “CIA was not prepared to conduct a detention and interrogation program.”

Warner expressed skepticism about confirming Haspel, questioning “the message the Senate would send” by appointing a director who worked in the interrogation program.

“Ms. Haspel has stated that the law has changed and that the RDI program is no longer legal. She has committed to upholding the law. I appreciate that, but it is not enough,” Warner said. “We must hear how you would react if the president asks you to carry out some morally questionable behavior that might seem to violate a law or treaty. How will you respond if a secret DOJ opinion authorizes such behavior and gives you a ‘get out of jail free’ card?”

Senate Intelligence Chairman Richard Burr praised Haspel as the most qualified nominee that could have been chosen for the post, and argued that her confirmation hearing should not be used to put the George W. Bush administration’s interrogation program on trial.

“I’d like to set the record straight and make clear to those in attendance, and the American people, that this hearing is not about programs already addressed by executive order, legislation and the court of law — it is about the woman seated before you,” Burr said.

For lawmakers on the fence, Haspel’s willingness to answer questions about her past will be a major factor in whether she will be able to clinch Democratic votes. And several senators from both parties say her answers will matter — they’re looking to her hearing to decide how they will vote on her nomination.

Sen. Angus King, an independent from Maine who is still undecided on Haspel, said the hearing was going to be key in whether he supports her.

“It’s an important hearing,” King said. “My principal concern is about the tapes’ destruction and what she was thinking, what her role was. That’s the essence of it.”

Haspel was selected as deputy CIA director last year, a position that did not require Senate confirmation. But President Donald Trump’s selection of Haspel to succeed Mike Pompeo atop the agency has been contentious ever since she was tapped in March. Her nomination was quickly opposed by human rights groups and many Democrats, as well as Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, over her role in the George W. Bush administration’s interrogation and detention program, in which critics say the CIA tortured terror detainees.

Critics point to Haspel’s time leading the CIA’s black site in Thailand in 2002, where harsh interrogations were conducted. Then in 2005, she was chief of staff to the CIA’s clandestine chief, Jose Rodriguez, when he ordered the destruction of tapes of CIA interrogations.

With Paul’s opposition and Sen. John McCain’s absence from Washington as he fights brain cancer, Haspel will need at least some Democratic support to win the simple majority needed for confirmation. Republicans are looking to the same red-state Democrats who voted for Pompeo’s confirmation as secretary of state last month to also back Haspel. Several have signaled they’re open to supporting her.

Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida pointed to support for Haspel from former Obama and Bush administration officials, while Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia said she “has been a true soldier and done her job.”

Other Democrats, however, say the CIA has failed to publicly disclose key details about her record that the public should have access to before she is confirmed to a Cabinet-level position.

Several Democrats on the Senate Intelligence Committee have urged the CIA and Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats to make Haspel’s record in the interrogation program public.

The CIA has declassified some materials, including an internal 2011 report on the tape destruction clearing her of wrongdoing. And the agency provided additional classified material to senators but has argued that the information cannot be made public for security reasons.

Democrats say the response is insufficient, and they have complained that the CIA is selectively releasing favorable parts of Haspel’s record.

They are also warning that Haspel will say little to nothing about the controversial parts of her career during the open hearing — there is also a classified session for senators — because they remain classified.

“As of now, this is headed toward a secret confirmation process,” said Sen. Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat, adding later, “It is going to take place in public. Yet I believe, as of now, people will not know much of what the nominee was doing during that crucial period and will not know a number of the facts … that relate to her record and who she really is.”

Haspel and the CIA tried to push back on the criticisms of her record in the lead-up to the hearing.

The CIA has waged its own public relations campaign for Haspel, releasing an extensive biography and tweeting support for her nomination. Dozens of former intelligence officials, including senior Obama administration officials, have expressed support for her nomination.

Senate Intelligence Chairman Richard Burr has been a vocal supporter of Haspel’s, and has argued that the CIA cannot declassify the materials that Democrats are seeking.

“This is an opportunity for the most qualified candidate nominated for that post to have an opportunity to share with America her expertise, her knowledge and her passion for the agency,” the North Carolina Republican said.

Haspel’s leadership experience has left many in the GOP leadership confident she’ll get the job.

“She’s got the résumé. She’s got all the field work. She knows this job cold,” Sen. John Thune of South Dakota, a member of GOP leadership, told CNN. Thune said Haspel “enjoys broad support among Republicans. The question is are there Democrats that will vote for her?”

This story has been updated and will continue to update during Wednesday’s hearing.
