Addison Russell’s Record Night Helps Cubs Beat Indians, Force Game 7 Of World Series

(CBS) The Cubs have earned the seventh and deciding game of the World Series that they so dearly coveted.

Behind a sharp outing from Jake Arrieta, a breakout offense led by Addison Russell and some help from the host’s outfielders, the Cubs rolled to a 9-3 win against the Indians in Game 6 of the World Series on Tuesday night at Progressive field. That sends the championship series to a winner-take-all Game 7 on Wednesday, when the Cubs have the opportunity to break their title drought that dates back to 1908 after they trailed 3-1 in the series just a couple days ago.

Shortstop Addison Russell was leading man Tuesday, as he tied a World Series single-game record with six RBIs. After a Kris Bryant homer put the Cubs up 1-0 with two outs in the first inning, Russell followed shortly thereafter with a bloop that went for a double and plated two runs when a pair of Indians outfielders miscommunicated in right-center.

In the third inning, Russell broke the game open with a one-out grand slam that followed a walk by Kyle Schwarber and singles from Anthony Rizzo and Ben Zobrist. That provided a 7-0 cushion for the Cubs and Arrieta, who allowed two runs on three hist and three walks in 5 2/3 innings while striking out nine.

The only serious trouble Arrieta ran into was in bottom of the fourth, when the Indians plated a run on a Mike Napoli RBI single and loaded the bases with two outs. Arrieta then struck out Tyler Naquin to get out of the jam and preserve the 7-1 lead.

Trailing 7-2 in the seventh, the Indians had two on with two outs in the seventh, but Cubs manager Joe Maddon turned to closer Aroldis Chapman, who induced a grounder from Francisco Lindor that set off a race to the bag. Lindor was initially ruled safe on the field, but the call was overturned to an out upon video review. Chapman threw 1 1/3 innings, being pulled after walking the lead-off batter in the bottom of the ninth, which came after Rizzo added a two-run homer in the top half.

Game 7 is set for Wednesday at 7:08 p.m. at Progressive Field, where Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks will oppose Indians right-hander Corey Kluber.
