Cubs Clinch NL Central, Will Face Nationals In NLDS

(CBS) What started as an uneven regular season has culminated with what the Cubs desired.

A division title that sets them up with a chance to defend their World Series championship.

The Cubs clinched the NL Central with a 5-1 win against the Cardinals at Busch Stadium on Wednesday night. It marks the second straight division crown for Chicago and its third consecutive postseason berth, the first time the franchise has accomplished that feat since 1908.

Addison Russell delivered the big blow, hitting a three-run homer to give the Cubs a 3-1 lead in the top of the seventh after Anthony Rizzo and Ben Zobrist opened the frame with back-to-back singles. Right-hander John Lackey was stellar for the Cubs, earning the win by going six innings and allowing one run on two hits and two walks while striking out three.

The Cubs will face the Nationals in National League Division Series, which will open in Washington D.C. on Oct. 6.

The Cubs were 43-45 and 5.5 games behind the Brewers in the division race at the All-Star break. Since then, they’ve gone 46-24, the second-best mark in baseball in that time.
