CHICAGO (CBS) — With the holiday shopping season underway, thieves have been targeting delivery trucks filled with packages.
Chicago police were investigating after packages were stolen from a FedEx truck and a UPS truck within 10 hours of each other on Wednesday.
Around 9 p.m. in the Chatham neighborhood, two men pointed a gun at a UPS driver on the 8500 block of South Prairie Avenue. Police said the robbers stole several packages from the back of the truck, then took off.
It was unclear how many boxes the bandits swiped, or the monetary value of the packages.
Detectives combed for evidence both inside and outside the truck.
Earlier in the day, robbers stole an entire truck of packages in the Park Manor neighborhood.
Police received a call that a FedEx truck had been stolen around 11:30 a.m. in the 7400 block of South Vernon Avenue. The stolen truck was found abandoned about a half-mile away, near 72nd and Evans.
Police dusted the truck for prints, and were working to determine how many packages were stolen.
FedEx said it works with drivers to be aware of their surroundings and report any unusual activity.
“We are aware of the vehicle theft in Chicago … and are grateful that no one was injured. We are cooperating fully with the investigating authorities at this time,” the company said in an email.
UPS did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
