Chicago Public Schools May Close 3 Weeks Early Without State Funding Boost

(CBS) — Chicago’s public schools may close three weeks early this year if the cash-strapped system does not receive a funding infusion from state government, the city’s top education official warned Monday.

Chicago Public Schools CEO Forrest Claypool made the statement, aimed at Gov. Bruce Rauner and lawmakers. They are currently trying to hammer out a state budget.

Claypool has criticized Rauner recently for vetoing a pension-funding bill that blew a hole in the current CPS budget. Gov. Rauner says he wanted a comprehensive funding-reform measure from lawmakers.

Ending the school year early presumably would create a host of fears that include parents scrambling to adjust. Safety also might be an issue in some neighborhoods because schools are seen as safe havens.
