(CBS) — A historic ballroom in suburban Willow Springs was severely damaged by fire Friday afternoon.
Pictures and video from the scene show flames engulfing the Willowbrook Ballroom, which has been along Archer Avenue since the 1920s.
Crews began battling the fire around 2 p.m.
Willow Springs Village Clerk Adena Baskovich tells WBBM Newsradio the ballroom holds a special place in the community.
“It’s one of the only ballrooms left in the whole United States,” she says. “There’s been so many beautiful weddings and so many special occasions there. It’s just very sad.”
