CHICAGO (CBS) — Aroldis Champman threw fireballs for 2 2/3 innings.
Of his 42 pitches–the most in a single outing as a Cub–about 80 percent were 98 miles per hour or higher. Most of those were 100 or above, looking at the velocity chart from Daren Willman, MLB’s Director of Baseball Research & Development.
He blanked the Indians, gave up one hit, struck out four and preserved the Cubs’ 3-2 victory, sending the series back to Cleveland for Game 6 on Tuesday.
That give the Cubs’ closer a full day of rest, which he will no doubt appreciate.
“Chapman came in a did something he has never done before,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. “He’s kinda fresh; he hasn’t been overused throughout the playoffs.”
