Cubs Stay Alive With 3-2 Win Over Indians In Game 5

(CBS) The Cubs found a way to stay alive.

Their season on the brink, their crowd on pins and needles after another early deficit, their star closer needing to be summoned in the seventh inning, Chicago held off the Cleveland Indians for a 3-2 win in Game 5 of the World Series on Sunday night at Wrigley Field. Seeking their first championship in 108 years, the Cubs will head back to Cleveland facing a 3-2 deficit and needing two more wins for a title.

The difference Sunday was the Cubs’ three-run fourth inning. Kris Bryant led off with a solo homer to erase the 1-0 deficit his team faced after Indians third baseman Jose Ramirez homered in the second inning. An Anthony Rizzo double and a Ben Zobrist single then set up an RBI infield single for Addison Russell, and David Ross later added a sacrifice fly after a Javier Baez bunt single loaded the bases.

Fireball closer Aroldis Chapman shut the door. He was called upon with one out in the seventh, retiring a pair of Indians with the tying run on second base. With the tying Indians run at third base with two outs in the eighth inning, Chapman struck out Francisco Lindor with a fastball at the knees on the outside corner.

Chapman worked a one-two-three ninth to finish off the eight-out save.

Cubs left-hander Jon Lester went six innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out five. Indians right-hander Trevor Bauer took the loss, going four innings and allowing three runs on six hits while striking out seven.

Game 6 is Tuesday night at Progressive Field. Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta opposes Indians right-hander Josh Tomlin.
